  • Bosch GEX 125-1 AE Orbital Eccentric Sander

    Hi all,

I'm sorry to ask this here but I have searched through in the forum and found no mention of the above product / tool (Bosch GEX 125-1 AE) which is marketed as an orbital eccentric sander. I've seen it in action at the local DIY store and it does indeed orbit and rotate. Is this a suitable product for car polishing ? Is it considered as a dual action tool ?

I know the meguiars / flex / PC has available tools but at a price point which is a bit high than to be desired for an amateur / beginner / enthusiast. This tool can go up to 12,000 rpm and bosch uses 230mm pads (they have foam, wool, etc). It can be used to sand wood to (but that's totally out of topic, haha).

Anyway, has anybody used this and also uses meguiars DA pads on it. Thanks.

Yes, the tool would work to polish paint. Don't use the Bosch pads though. Especially if they are 230mm. They'd be too large to do a great deal of correction on a dual action machine. Also, never use wool pads on a dual action machine. Foam or microfibre pads only.

I don't have any tools at the moment. I just use the pads and manually polish the car with UC and UP. Topping is off with liquid carnauba wax. (Washed the car with Gold Shampoo and clay with the mild clay).

Btw, my mistake on the pad size, it uses 130mm (not 230mm). That means I can use the meguiar's selection of foam pads right ?

Thanks Selectchoice. I'm still deciding on the prospect of using the 105 & 205 combo for my silver colour audi a4 (not exactly an easy colour to shine). My car does not need any swirl removal or major paint correction, mostly water marks and the surface are fairly rough). I may need the aggressive clay to rectify that.

Just thought I'd find you a post on the differences of the 3 different levels of clay and a links to help you understand a couple important facts about smooth surface, C2000 mild & C2100 aggressive clay and get a game plan on what and how to go about removing your waterspots.

There is a noticeable difference in aggressiveness between the consumer clay and the C2000 Pro Mild blue clay. Heavier contamination will be removed faster, as will over spray, etc. Usage is otherwise identical between the two. On extremely delicate paint some light hazing may occur with the C2000, but this is quite rare. If it does happen, you'll need to use a light paint cleaner or maybe even just a cleaner wax to remove the haze. If you intend to machine polish after claying anyway, then this is a moot point.

For the record, the C2100 Pro Aggressive red clay is much more aggressive still. It is very likely that this clay will haze paint, even if the paint isn't terribly delicate. It really should only be used in cases of extreme contamination and when machine polishing is planned as part of the process.

And a great write-up on the types of waterspots and how to go about removing them.

Just to update my progress with the Bosch orbital polisher.

That was my hood after I washed it with the Meguiar's Gold Wash Shampoo and clayed it with the red aggressive clay bar. The surface is smooth now but water spotting is highly visible. It's quite hard to take a photo of a silver grey paint on a dull day.

The photo above is above Ultimate Compound (Red Foam Pads), Ultimate Polish (Black Foam Pads) and topping it off with the Liquid Wax with Carnauba (Yellow Pads). Water spots are totally gone and the surface are super glossy. Again, silver grey paint are hard to photograph. Awesome. Thanks all.

The backing plate on the tool is 5" so our older Soft Buff pads would be the better choice when compared to the 7" Soft Buff 2.0 The big problem with this tool when it comes to paint defect removal is the combined lack of power and extremely short stroke (2.5mm). While yes, this indeed a dual action tool and has the same basic movement as a G110v2, Porter Cable, GG, or even Rupes tools, it really was designed more for finish sanding than anything else. It's totally safe to use on your paint, and you can even use our microfiber pads with it, but don't expect any sort of heavy duty defect removal with it. It just wasn't designed for that purpose.
