  • 2002 Camaro Z28

I cleaned up my dad's 02 Z28 with 104,000 miles on it. This car needed a full correction. The paint was rough and it had a lot of swirls. He is the second owner and he wanted it to look as good as mine after he saw what I did with mine. So I did a full correction to remove swirls and make this car look as good as I could. This is his daily driver and him and I are happy with the results. I am glad I invested in the microfiber pads and D300. These car's have a really hard clear coat. I had a hell of a time with foam pads and 105 when I worked on my 02 Camaro which can be seen in the back. The microfiber pads worked great with the hard GM clear. Here are some after photos. I did not take before shots but it was pretty heavily swirled. The color is navy blue metallic but it appears to look purple in certain angles. It's a really great looking color with the metallic flake really popping out now that it's clean

Here is a list of products that I used:

    Exterior:
    Deep Crystal Car Wash
Nanoskin Autoscrub sponge fine grade using D155 Last Touch as clay lube
D300 with 5" microfiber cutting pad on a porter cable 7424XP
    M205 with a 5.5" white LC pad on a porter cable 7224XP
    M21 synthetic sealant
D45 Vinyl & Plastic Coating on the the exterior front cowl between the engine bay and the windshield.
Ultimate Quick Detailer for the final wipedown
Ultimate Spray wax on the windows and mirrors

    Wheels and Tires:
D143 Non-Acid Wheel & Tire Cleaner at 2:1 to clean the tires and the wheels (external and internal). The wheels were off due to a brake change.
Hot Rims Brake Dust Barrier. Sprayed the external and internal of the wheel as they were off the car due to a brake change.
    D163 Tire & Trim Gel
D103 APC+ at 10:1 to clean the wheel wells

Quick pic I caught with my phone during the final wipedown.

Did a quick wash after some rain that passed through the area a few days ago. The car got a 2 bucket wash, D143 wheel & tire cleaner to remove the old tire & trim gel, ultimate quik wax and some freshly applied tire & trim gel to the tires.

      The car is looking good

      Your Dad must be pleased...

Thanks. He is very pleased. I was showing him how to properly maintain it so it stays looking good. He gets compliments on it all the time especially from a coworker who has the same car and color. My dad saw him looking at it and admiring it. The next thing is to detail the interior. So I will update this thread again soon.

          Re: 2002 Camaro Z28

So it's been 7 months since I last corrected my dad's camaro. It has been maintained in that time with D156 and M135. I could tell M21 had seen it's end of life as the sheeting had become very slow. Beading was just ok. Very pleased with M21.

My dad did make the mistake of taking it to the local coin op and used a brush a few weeks back. As soon as I heard that I cringed. I knew the damage was already done. I didn't have the luxury to work on it for a long time as I had taken Tuesday off from my normal job to just chill on my birthday. But I decided to have him leave the car with me so I can work on it. Car was washed on Monday and pulled into the garage overnight. Tuesday I started with claying. I typically use a fine grade nanoskin autoscrub sponge but this car needed actual clay. It had some tough contaminants that the sponge could not remove on the hood, roof and trunk. The sponge was fine on the doors, fenders and rear quarters.

As I finished claying the car I got a look of what I had to deal with under an LED light. Just as I thought the brush did a number on it. He got a lesson when he came to get it lol. I did a test spot with M205 on a white lake country polishing pad and that knocked down some of the light scratches. The deeper one's were tougher. Since I could not keep his car for too long I did not have the luxury to compound it(which it needs again). So I went with an orange lake country cutting pad with M205 and got better results. This was the way to go especially with the hard clear on this car. I just love how versatile M205 is. It gave me about 80-85% correction on a majority of the car. I will post more pics later as I take some more of the car in the next couple of days.

          This is what was used:
          Wash: D111 shampoo plus
Clay: Clay magic blue clay bar + D155 Last Touch
Polish: M205 + Orange Lake Country cutting pad
          Sealant: Ultimate Liquid Wax
          Glaze: M7
          Wax: M26
          Exhaust tips: DUB Metal Polish
          DA: Porter Cable 7424XP

An example of what the clay bar was picking up. This was from the passenger side roof.

Swirls before. The car had these on a majority of it.

The correction power of M205 using an orange lake country cutting pad. Finished LSP ready.

I need to dress the tires and the trim this weekend as I ran out of time on Tuesday.

              Nice work as usual Guz..

Yes the power and versatility of M205 is astounding, to say the least...

There has been quite the interwebal buzz about 205 and its versatility for the last 6 months now. When used properly, with the understanding of processes and variables involved with correction and paint types, it is a super powerful and versatile buffing liquid. The limitations are truly almost endless. Tall stroke machines have added even ANOTHER dimension for the versatility of M205 and the SMAT products... so tip of the hat goes to the product engineers who designed a product that will work for past, present, and future paint technologies.

As your work illustrates, it just goes to show how far knowledge, coupled with patience and thought during the correction process, along with quality time spent honing your craft can take you in the pursuit of that show car finish!

              Looks GREAT!

                  Looking good Michael.

I'm interested to see some full after shots. The M205/UW/M7/M26 combo should look killer!

                    Thanks fellas.

Here are some more photos. Take with my iphone so bare with me on the quality.

Pulled it out into the sun and you can see how well M205 worked with the cutting pad.

It has a more deep rich wet look with M205/ULW/M7/M26 than the last time when I used D300/M205/M21 by itself.

Was fighting the sund directly over head. There is no blue spot on the hood. Just the sun giving me issues at the time.

Metal flake in the paint looks amazing.

                    Various reflection shots.

My camaro reflecting off the driver side rear quarter panel.

DUB metal polish on the tips. This stuff works great.

Up next are clean/dressing the tires, polishing/sealing the wheels and clean/dressing the trim. As well as the interior which will get ultimate protectant, air refresher odorizer and the leather sealer system for the leather.

Thanks. I actually got compliments on the car from my brothers friend as I was giving it an M135 wipe down after a nice wash. He was amazed at how good the car looked and how great the color looked. A great feeling.
