Don't let claying scare you Angela. With light pressure using the right clay and plenty of lubricant, it's almost a no brainer. Meguiar's "mild" clay is the place to start. Videos by the ton on this subject.

It's always a good idea to clay before using a compound to clean your paint surface. but the clay isn't likely to remove the bird etching, it just cleans the surface in preparation for your polish/compound. As for the bird poo, you may need the next level of aggressiveness, Meguiar's Ultimate Polish or Ultimate Compound. I assume you're working by hand, not a polisher?
