Microfiber Cutting Disc and Ultimate Compound

I have a bit of "dieback" (very minor orange peel) on the repainted hood of my white Ram. I know the condition exists only in the clearcoat. A body shop tech has lightly sanded the hood with Trizact 3000 and then polished it..no compound. It's still not quite "right". The condition is still slightly noticeable under certain lighting conditions. I do not want to sand any more because then the repaint would be much more level than the factory paint.

I had planned to use my Porter cable PC, a Meguiar's maroon cutting pad and Ultimate Compound followed by a Meguiar's polishing pad and Ultimate Polish do do a bit more correction. Would I get better results using a microfiber cutting disc and can the cutting disk be used with Ultimate Compound?

If most of the 3000 grit sanding marks were removed then anything left is still.......3000 grit sanding marks. Whether or not a maroon cutting pad and UC will be more or less effective than a microfiber cutting pad and UC is tough to say as either one could leave some micromarring that needs to be cleaned up with a second step, as you've mentioned. This is getting into a very gray area since we don't recommend using the maroon foam cutting pad on a DA just because of that potential for marring, and the microfiber pads weren't really designed with UC in mind. Trying to make a theoretical comparison between a couple of "outside the box" processes on aftermarket paint isn't going to give you a definitive answer. If ever there was a situation for a test spot, this is it. If you already have a foam cutting pad and UC on hand, by all means give that a try first, at least on part of the area in question. If it does the trick, great. If not, then stepping up to a more aggressive process is going to be called for, and that would be the microfiber cutting pad.

The best news here is that you are dealing with what sounds like pretty non aggressively created 3000 grit marks, and not something more aggressive than that. You should, therefore, be able to successfully remove them with a DA rather than having to step up to rotary work, as would be the traditional method for sanding mark removal.

The maroon pad and Ultimate Compound got-r-done. I had no marring that I could see, but I still followed up with a polishing pad and Ultimate Polish. Then a coat of Ultimate Wax.

Still think think that I'll order some microfiber discs. Just not sure which brand. Yep, I know what forum this is and I bleed Meguiar's blood ...most of the time.
