A slight mistake on fresh CC paint, hopefully?

My wife wrecked her 2011 Ford Fusion three weeks ago. The initial estimate for paint included the hood, left fender, upper and lower bumper covers/fascia. My wife informed me of an additional claim to our policy this past week. It appears the body shop needed additional prep and paint time for the Bordeaux Reserve Metallic CC paint.

The wife came home this evening and I performed a walk around. I found a dried bird bomb around 1" in diameter on the right fender. I wiped it down with Gold Class High Gloss Detailer and I found the spot had some slight staining. I then applied a non-Meg's polymer cleaner wax that I had on hand. It cleaned up the paint slightly but the stain is still present.

And now to the ?

I found a small paint defect on the right fender that wasn't there before the body repair. I immediately went in the house and checked the repair order (RO) from the body shop. The right fender was repainted with the other repair work. I freaked out and grabbed my bottle of Ultimate Polish. I applied the polish and then wiped it off with a fresh MF towel. I apllied the polish two more times and then went over the fender with Meguiars Classic (red bottle) Quick Detailer.

Should I worry about the paint? Is there anything else I can do? The CC is etched slightly and I am really irritated about the whole ordeal. The past three weeks have not been kind to her Ford Fusion or my '94 f150.

The bird bomb was probably there for a while (a few days) so it etched into the clear coat. Did you pick up the car right after they completed the work?

Bring it back as soon as possible. Maybe they can fix it with stronger polish and a rotory.

We picked it up the afternoon of the 26th. I gave it a walk-around that evening, it wasn't there sunday afternoon when I took the trash out. It may have been there a little over 48 hrs as I did not perform a walkaround monday evening.


I've had a G110v2 DA for over two years. I wasn't sure how it would perform on the fresh paint?

If it doesn't bother you then do nothing. If it does, polish it untill it's gone.

You can buff out fresh paint after 48 hours of it being shot from the spray gun. So get out your G110v2 and a yellow polishing pad and M105 or UC and get rid of the etching. Just dont wax it untill after 30 days so the paint has a chance to fully cure.

My understanding is the polish step is part of a new paint job. The paint shop will polish before delivery to end customer. My shop told me that the polish step is important to blend in the new paint with the other panels.

No one 'has' to do anything....

But if any wet sanding were done, you would have to do some kind of cleaning/polishing to remove the sanding marks, or give the customer a dull paint job.

I finally had a chance to perform a good inspection on the repair work performed by the body shop. The body shop is known for it's outstanding service and also performs full frame off resto's and car show finishes. I have to be honest in saying the work on my wifes car is fair to good at best. There is numerous specs of dirt/contaminants on the hood and both LT/RT fenders. The passenger fender has a 4" x 4" area that looks like rough bullhide. The fresh air cowl moulding isn't aligned properly and a screw is missing. Instead of installing the proper hardware, a little black push plug was used. It truly looks like the work was done in someones backyard.

I was able to remove most (95% or so) of the bird drop etching with my DA, a polishing pad and UP. I will wait to perform any other work on it until after I have contacted my insurance company. The work performed on my car is truly unacceptable.

I hope it all works out in the end.

I rarely hear of "good" work coming out of body shops. I don't know why this is.
Customers ask me all the time if I know a good body shop and I can never recommend any.
Every car I come across that comes back from a body shop always has over spray and not just the opposite side of the car. It's usually right next to the part they fixed. So they don't even cover 1 foot away from there work? I guess they just don't care.

Glad to hear the bird bomb problem is corrected, now on to the rest of the paint.
