Using 3'' unigrit on a DA

Hi guys,

So in the past, I've use the meguiar's sanding papers along with the sanding block to fix headlights. Since I occasionally do this for family and friends with yellow headlights looking for a nice restoration. My procedure was like any other, start with 1000 grit move up to 2000, then finally 3000. Removed sanding marks with M105, Ultimate Polish, and sealed with Nxt 2.0. Well now I have been able to get my hands on the unigrit 3'' foam pad, and a set of unigrit sanding discs. My question is, if I were to use this on a DA was the best speed setting for sanding? as well as which speed setting not to go over. While on the topic of headlights, I also got the 12oz Headlight Protectant. Now will that go after Ultimate Polish step? or After Nxt 2.0?

Here is a great tread on sanding paint with the DA. Power of 3000 Grit. In the tread Mike states to use speed 4. The speed is listed in post #3. I know it's not the same as a plastic headlight but hopefully there is still some useful information there for you.

I use 3" Unigrit discs for headlight restoration with my G110v2 all the time: speed 3-4, interface foam pad plus not too much down pressure. I start with 1,000 grit and finish with 3,000. I also use protecting tape before this procedure for safety.

For sanding mark removal I use M105/ M205 combo with a rotary buffer and 4" spot buffing pads/ W63 backing plate. I've started putting OptiCoat 2.0 as a sealant with good results.

For headlights - yes, for paint - no.

If you deal with heavily oxidized headlights those aggressive discs will speed up the removal process. Finishing with 3,000-grit will make sanding mark removal easier.

Using the foam interface pad is critical here, so don't forget that! Speed 3-4 is best but remember that if you go higher in speed you run the risk of hydroplaning the disc on the water and you'll actually lose cut. It's a bit counter intuitive, but true.

On very badly oxidized and degraded headlights, yes, you can go as low as 320 grit and work up from there. Our Pro Headlight & Spot Repair Kit comes with these grits for that very purpose. Just keep in mind that 320, 500 and 800 grit are designed for dry use and will get eaten up pretty quickly.
