Need to ask ~ was the hood of your car "cool" to the touch? How hot was the temp. the day you did this? I ask that because no matter what product I lay on by hand, I've never had it dry "immediately." Just based on what you wrote, I think the temp. of hood and air caused this to dry to fast.
I'm new to this forum and the Mequiar's products so if certain products have a "shelf life" then perhaps your polish had expired, causing the problem you had.
If that happens again, take some detail spray and give your towel or applicator a quick shot of it. You only need to just barely spray a very very small amount.
I know some guys enjoy the "therapy" of working on their car using the "hands on" method. However, I would highly recommend you invest in a buffer. It only took me "one" time to do a complete "hand detail" on my vehicle. When I was done, I immediately got on the phone and ordered me a PC and Flex buffer. Life is good!
