    Hello from So. Cal.

My name is Hal. I have a 2012 Ford Escape Limited. Black. This is my first black car. When I bought my last two cars, I asked for Black and drove off with white. This time I asked for white and left with black.

The black looks awesome, if it's clean so best case would be a wash a day. Not real practical. Also, with sunshine year round, most days I can fry eggs on the hood or roof. It makes it impossible to wash in my driveway because the water is dry before I can get at it with a chamois. Also, we have hard water so the second the water dries it leaves white spots. I go to a wash it yourself place where their water is filtered through giant reverse osmosis tanks eliminating the white spots and they have a covered drying area which allows me to dry my car before the sun does it. $5 and I get a much better wash myself than any car wash I have ever been at and included in the $5 is tire wash, low-pressure pre-wash, high pressure soap, rinse and then low pressure Meguiar's spray wax and and low pressure spot free rinse. They have a foaming brush but I do it by hand. I have never let a brush touch the paint.

Cool Re: Hello from So. Cal.

    Welcome to MOL, Hal!

You're in the right place. Black isn't just a color, it's a commitment.

First tip, don't put eggs on your paint.

    (Sorry about that, couldn't resist.)

It may sound kind of crazy (at least to those who aren't car detailing nuts), but washing your car at night can go a long way toward mitigating those problems.

    Oh yeah, that works too.

    Wise choice!

One more tip, if you're using a natural chamois you might want to give synthetic a try, that or waffle weave microfiber towels. Most people who try them never go back to animal skins ever again.

And if you can make it, come on out to a TNOC some time soon.

Welcome to MOL, neighbor (I'm in the same zip code!). You really should come down for a Thursday Night Open Garage or even a full Saturday Class if you can make it.
