PRC for single stage paint on taxi cabs

    Hi Everyone,
I am new to MOL but not to Detailing. I have a question for everyone regarding bringing life back to single stage yellow paint on my companies taxi cabs. I am IT director of Yellow Cab of Columbus Ohio but in the late 90's I owned my own Detailing business so my experience led my company to commission me to set up an in house detail shop for our taxis as we have our own mechanical shop and body shop.

Long story short our body shop uses a single stage paint process of a base Corvette yellow with a "little clear" mixed in lol. The reason for this as I'm told by our body shop techs is that due to the constant repainting of out taxis, as you can imagine they get banged up frequently, a base coat/clear coat isn't feasible as downtime is money in our business.

We are using PRC with wool pads and while I am quite pleased with results we're obtaining using dewalt 849x rotary I am looking for opinions on other techniques/product as the single stage paint can be quite dry and was curious as to weather PRC is the best choice for this type of paint. Also has anyone used PRC with the Solo systems wool pads and what were the results? Thanks for this great forum as it has been a great resource in outfitting our new detail operation using Meguiars Detailer/Professional line of products exclusively.

What condition is the paint in before detailing?

Or are you doing the PRC right after the body shop repaints everything?

We're actually using PRC on badly faded/dulled/oxidized taxis as the single stage paints dulls very quickly since there is no real UV protection due to the lack of clear coat. We don't typically even address the paint once it has been refinished with a wet sand and polish or even a coat of wax for that matter although we just have begun applying M21 to fresh paint jobs to try and add a degree of UV protection. Taxis live in a harsh environment so I'm not trying to have them win shows but trying to keep them shining the best we can between paint jobs really.

PRC is a good product for this situation, but you may also want to try some the older, oil-rich products with a rotary on SS paint, such as M02 or M80. All three are rotary-friendly and the oil content "moisturizes" the finish while the abrasives are polishing, giving you more working time. Pad choice can be determined by the degree of cut you need. I've used either wool or the yellow pad with a rotary, depending on need. M02 has more cut but doesn't finish as well, as it was meant to be followed with something like M09. M80 cuts less, but has IMO more oil content and finishes LSP-ready.

Thanks for the input. I will try a bit of machine glaze prior to PRC and see how it goes. Also does anyone know if the Solo red and yellow wool pads work well with PRC? Thanks in advance

Also consider # 7 Glaze, if the car has some down time you can let it soak. Good suggestions so far ^^^^^^^. For cheap and long lasting protection I would go with Collonite 476S.

I dont think a cab company is going to do a 5 step detail on all their cars though.

Yes, they'll work fine with PRC. But they won't correct a situation where PRC is drying out too quickly due to oxidized paint. As an alternative you might want to look into M66 as a good one step for your needs.

Thanks Michael! Can you explain the major differences between PRC and M66?

Would like to update this by sharing that the solo liquid plus burgundy and yellow wool pads work phenomenal on our SS yellow paint!
