  • Will a Meg's self-centering backing plate work with this buffer?

Wow, first post here in around 6 years! I guess after my detailing class with Rod Kraft, I didn't have many questions left!

But now I do have one!

I while back, I "inherited" a rotary buffer that's basically identical to this one (link). It has a 5/8" threaded shaft (if my outside micrometer is right) with two flat spots at the base of the shaft, where the rubber backing plate locks in. The backing plate slides on, and you have a circular "nut" that locks it down.

I've been able to achieve some pretty good results with it (its main use so far has been restoring cloudy headlight lenses with PlastX), but it uses those old-fashioned pads that wrap around the backing plate and tie with a string. They're annoying to say the LEAST! They get a bit off-center, the buffer goes out of balance, and it shakes your arms off.

So, I've been looking for a self-centering solution, something like the Meguiar's backing plate (link), but I'm not sure if it'll fit my buffer.

    Anyone have any recommendations?

I think all of the Meguiar's backing plates for rotary are 5/8's. I use the W64 and W65 plates. The W68 self centers the Soft Buff 2.0's.

Thanks. The local Pep Boys had a W67 (or 68) but alas, no pads to fit it. So I assume the Soft Buff pads will fit the W65 and W65. Seems like they would, since people on Amazon seem to be ordering them together and I don't see any reviews to the contrary.

Our backing plates with fit any rotary with a 5/8" arbor so you're fine there. If you're going to be using the Soft Buff 2.0 pads then you really should be using the W68 backing plate as the W64/W65 are either the wrong diameter and/or the hook material is not the correct match to the loop material on the 2.0 pads. If you're going to use the W64 or W65 then you should be using the W7006/8006/9006 or the W7000/8000/9000 pads, respectively. For more info on why this is important, see this thread.

Re: Will a Meg's self-centering backing plate work with this buffer?

Ok, after reading that thread, I've changed my mind. I think I'm going with the W68 Rotary backing plate, and the Soft Buff 2.0 pads. But I have one more question.

I've found that 7" pads are kind of a tight squeeze in some places, so I was considering getting something smaller. I found a place that sells a W63 backing plate (3" dia) and 4" Soft Buff pads. But I noticed there's no W63 listed anymore on the Meg's website, so I was wondering if there was something newer that replaced it. I'm also worried that if this is an old backing plate, I might eventually not be able to find pads for it.

            Any advice?

can anyone please advice me for this...
