  • D114 Rinse Free Express Wash - First impression & quick review (with pics)

Year 2012 marked Meguiar's entry into waterless and rinseless car wash markets. Ultimate Wash & Wax Anywhere was my favorite product for cold winter months to keep my vehicle in good shape. Now when temperatures went much above the freezing point it's time to try out the rinseless approach. The biggest benefit of that: total car wash with minimum use of water (one or two water buckets only).

My previous rinseless car wash experience was with products by Optimum (Optimum No Rinse, aka ONR) and Detailer's Pride (DP Rinseless Wash & Gloss). I was pretty excited to try Meguiar's newest product as I was very pleased with waterless version.

Two dark colored metallic paint vehicles were used for testing: Honda Civic and BMW X3. The first one was really dirty: no wash for about 8 weeks and couple inches of seasonal pollen on top of dirt. The second one was driven in super heavy rain for about 40 miles.

Rinseless car wash accessories/ products used in testing:
    - D114 Meguiar's Rinse Free Express Wash,
    - two 5-gallon water buckets with grid guards (each filled with 4 gallons of water),
    - dilution ratio: D114 1.5 oz./ 1 gallon of water,
    - Meguiar's Microfiber Wash Mitt,
    - Meguiar's Water Magnet Microfiber Drying Towel,
    - wheel and tire brushes used after paint wash.

    Honda Civic before pics:

D114 forms suds which is little unusual for rinseless soap but it gives a good feeling.

    Honda Civic after pics:

The vehicle came out really good. The amount of dirt removed was very intense. If I used a waterless product I would end up with at least a dozen of microfiber towels used. I was very impressed how glossy the paint looked. The dilution ratio, Meguiar's recommends 1-2 oz./ gallon depending on how dirty vehicle is, handled the amount of dirt extremely well.
D114 has very synthetic smell (if anybody cares about scent than Ultimate Wash & Wax Anywhere will leave car smelling super nice for hours).

D114 proved once again to be a very effective rinseless car soap. The paint was left super clean and very glossy. When using a rinseless method I really recommend a good quality wash media (microfiber or natural wool) and drying towel to avoid inflicting any marks.

    My observations:
    - good cleaning and super easy drying abilities,
    - wash media just glides on paint surface, it's super slick,
    - easy dirt removal from wash media, nothing gets trapped,
    - leaves paint very glossy (I think we have a market leader in that department),
    - super safe on all type of paint, including modern scratch-sensitive clear coats (Honda has very soft clear),
    - no soapy residue left behind on glass nor exterior trim.

I definitely recommend this product. Even if a good through wash is needed before serious paint correction session, D114 won't disappoint. For those detailers looking for super glossy finish Meguiar's Rinse Free Express Wash would be absolutely right choice.

Thanks Greg for the write-up and photos. Based on your recommendation, I have to give it a try. Current I'm in a "relationship" with UWWA, but I think I've purchased all the rebate tagged bottles and need to try another of the 2012 products.

How do you feel this compares to ONR? I've never used either but I've heard a lot of people really like ONR because of the gloss level it leaves behind. I remember seeing a Michael Stoops post saying this slightly different than ONR because it wasn't really designed to leave much in the way of gloss, and was rather just a true rinseless paint cleaner. I could be mis-remembering what he said, but from your impressions it sounds like it leaves more behind than ONR.

Do you feel this gets the car as clean as a regular "hose" wash? I've been using Gold Class exclusively for the last year or so, but I think I need to change up my routine. My family has very dirty cars and even after giving them a thorough wash, the cars just aren't that clean. I'm still getting some dirt and grime left behind.

        Thanks, David.

I survived last winter thanks to UWWA. Now it was time to switch to a rinseless method. You won't be disappointed with D114's performance.

You control D114's cleaning strength by its dilution ratio: 1-2 oz./ gallon. I used a between setting (1.5 oz./ gallon) and it performed really well even on super dirty Honda. It's much slicker than ONR which makes moving wash media very easy. Definitely more gloss than ONR.

Great write up, Greg, thanks for taking the time document your findings so thoroughly. It is a bit surprising that you're seeing such a high level of gloss since we didn't really put anything in it that is designed to enhance gloss. It's an awesome cleaner though, that's for sure, and drying should easily be a very fast and completely streak free process. The before/after shots of the hood of your X3 really tell the story though. It didn't even look all that dirty in the before shot, but the after shot looks like you just applied a coat of wax! As for the Honda, it was pretty dirty and we're sure a lot of people new to this concept would be surprised to learn you can safely clean a car with a rinseless wash, but the after shots again look like it was just waxed! Great stuff, Greg!!!

We should clarify something, however, regarding dilution ratios: recommended dilution ratio is 1 ounce of D114 to two gallons of water, but for very dirty vehicles you can double that and use 1 ounce of D114 per gallon. The instructions on the initial run of labels state a 1 ounce per gallon dilution ratio, but we are adjusting that down for routine use.

            Thank you, Mike.

I was extremely and pleasantly surprised of D114's gloss. It's very impressive. The owner of the Civic thought that I machine buffed her car to bring the gloss back.

I put the dilution ratio reverse in my write-up: I meant 1 oz. of D114/ 1-2 gallons of water. I used 1.5 oz./ 2 gallons of water. I'm sorry about the confussion.

Anyway, it's an amazing rinseless wash. Owners of newer or soft painted cars will appreciate D114's extra slickness very much. When used with good quality wash/ dry media it's 110% safe.

Ah I'm glad to have that clarified. In the initial "announcement" thread, I believe the thinking was that it was 2 ounces per 1 gallon of water, and people were comparing this negatively to ONR, which I believe is 1oz/gallon. Knowing this is "twice as concentrated" as ONR is a real additional selling point -- especially if it works better to boot.

ONR recommends one ounce to two gallons of water. We are recommending the same dilution unless the car is really dirty, in which case you might want to go 1 ounce to 1 gallon of water.

                      Great review!
I became an ONR convert this winter as a way to wash inside my garage. I liked it, but hated how my mitts (the Meg's MF mit) got stained. After using up one bottle, I decided to try D114. To me it felt more slick than the ONR. If you put you hand in the bucket, the water felt more slimy. I also think it is easier to dry without streaks. Finally, my mitts are still bright white when finished which I really love.
I still have some Hyper was left to use up. When it is gone, I don't know if I'll ever buy a traditional wash again. Eliminating the 2 rinses has made washing that much faster.

Okay, it's 1 oz. of D114 per 1-2 gallons of water. Maximum cleaning ability (super dirty vehicles) 1 oz./ 1 gallon, light dirt 1 oz./ 2 gallons of water.

Rinseless approach is definitely much easier. I also observed wash media much cleaner after just quick scrub against grid guard.
