Meguiar's masking tape ?

Somewhere over on the AGO forum I thought I remembered Mr. Phillips mention an article he had remembered, but couldn't seem to locat, on Meguiar's masking tape and how it is different than say, 3M tape or other tapes.

I'm not necessarily looking for the article, though that would work too, but I'd like to hear more about the Meguiar's tape.

I currently use blue painters tape (Lowe's) and 3M green that I can at a paint supply house.

Anyone have any information on the Meguiar's masking tape?

Could be what they're describing...dunno. I've seen that same description on that site before. Great prices there most of the time too. I'd almost swear that Mr. Phillps recently made reference about the Meg's tape being different for some reason. To my knowledge he never did reply back on that thread and maybe even never found the article, but I thought he mentioned knowing about an article on the tape. I'll see if I can find that particular post, or thread over at AG. I thought he meant that the article was over here somewhere.

The blue and green 3M painters tapes are just that - masking tape designed with painting in mind. That means they've been developed to promote a very clean edge when painting up against them, and they also use adhesive that is extremely safe for use on fresh paint. That also means the adhesive isn't terribly strong, but it doesn't really need to be, given it's intended use.

Our detailer's tape does not take these considerations into account because it's designed for use in a detailing environment, not a paint application one. That means, primarily, that the adhesive is a bit stronger so the tape will hold on to trim a bit better than a painters tape, and is able to better withstand having a buffing pad banging into it and running up and over it. It should come as no big surprise to anyone that our tape is made in conjunction with 3M since 3M is our parent company. But it was made to our specifications for detailing, rather than painting, purposes.

Lastly, the more specialized aspects of the painters tape makes those two versions more expensive than our detailer's tape. If you rarely purchase tape because you're only buffing out your own car once a year, the savings obviously aren't huge and you can pick up the 3M painters tape at almost any hardware store. But if you're detailing a lot of cars and going through a lot tape, it probably makes sense to order the detailer's tape in quantity and save some cash.
