    Liquid or Paste Wax Last Longer?

    Is it true that paste wax can last longer than liquid? I mean in terms of storing them. I read somewhere on the internet (forgot where and when) saying that a paste wax can be stored up to many years compared to liquid wax without having the quality affected. Is it really true? Or does the environment affects the quality of wax being stored?
    Ex: lower temperature area can keep the quality of the wax better than hotter and dryer place in many years to come?

    I'm not 100% sure but like you mentioned, keeping the wax in a cool dry environment such as a basement will help with longevity by a long shot.

      From my own experience, paste lasts and lasts last. I have a half tin of M-16 that is probably 15 years old...still good.

      But like Nick says, any 'wax' doesn't like extreme temperature swings. Guess one could think of treating wax's like wine...nice cool temps.

        So it doesn't really matter whether it's liquid or paste? Both can be stored for years if it was kept well? Or will the liquid evaporate over time? Any idea?

          I'm not totally sure to be honest. My dad has a bottle of liquid wax that is at least 15 years old and its still good. I don't think the form really matters.

            Bill, I have a can of M16 which is almost 2 years and still doing great. I'm not gonna say anything bout it. It's really proven and this is the only paste wax I have in collection.
            So I wanted to know how TRUE it is that paste wax can last longer if stored for many years. Considering everything as equal. Which can last longer?
            I might change my waxes to paste if it is really true

              Where did your dad store his wax? 15 years? It's crazy! I can store at most 2-3 years before it's empty!
              Anyway, Nick how often do you wax your car?

                It's been in the basement most its life. We don't ever use it much. It's some 3M product.

                Trust me, we wax very often lol I wax my truck once a month at least and my dad waxes his car and my moms car once a month. A tin of Ultimate Paste wax goes pretty quick at my house.

                  We have classic old glass bottles of Meguiar's product around the office that are easily 50+ years old and in many cases the product inside is still viable, but most of those are high oil content polishes rather than liquid waxes. Generally speaking you can expect our products in liquid/lotion form to have a shelf life of about 5 years. Most people store their car care products in the garage and therefore they get exposed to temperature changes, which can shorten the lifespan. The greater the temperature swings, the more frequent the temperature swings, and the longer a product stays at a temperature extreme the faster it will spoil. For example: one good freeze/thaw will generally ruin a lotion type product (liquid wax, compound, paint cleaner, etc) or leaving it in the trunk of the car during a Southwest US summer with temperatures well over 100F can do the same thing. If you store product in a garage in the upper Midwest and the garage comes close to freezing several times during the winter, that can shorten the lifespan of a product, and so on. Storing at room temperature and away from direct light is best, but not always practical (no way in heck I, personally, could store all my supplies inside the house!).

                  So, if you took a paste wax and a liquid wax and stored them both in the house at a pretty constant temperature, both may well last for many, many years beyond our stated 5 year time frame. But the paste version will be able to better withstand temperature extremes and overall will likely outlive a liquid under "common use and storage" conditions. I have some M16 paste wax at home that is at least 6 years old and it's still perfectly fine, and I expect it to be perfectly fine for years to come.

                    My Dad passed away in September 1969. I still have some of his paste wax in a box. There are several tins of "Simonize" stuff there, but one was open and every once in a while, just for kicks, I'll open it up and use a bit on something. There's the "Simonize" in there, some "Dupont #7" polish, some other stuff .... and some liquid "ACDelco Chrome Polish" that's never been opened that I can shake and hear ....

                      I spent a few months looking into what's in paste wax for a place I worked at. It has some wax, oils, secret stuff and some moisture or water. We tested it to see how long it took to dry out on the counter, in a can, a bag, etc. How long it lasts depends on how well the container is sealed. You could even put the can in another can or bag to help the contents stay in good condition for a really long time.

                      The stuff in plastic bottles shouldn't dry out at all, a long as there's no air leak. the worst that could happen is possibly some settling of the contents, but not with Meguiar's products.

                      Also, in the winter, I put all the water-based products or freeze-sensitive products in a tub and bring it in the house (the basement) during the winter so it will stay relatively warm. I wish they would put a storage temperature on the label ("store 40-70F")

                        I keep my supplies in the basement. I still have meguiars cleaner wax in liquid and paste from the late 90's that still perform great. Anything inadvertently left in the garage over a winter was adversely affected.

                          Many years ago I bought the remaining stock from a supplier who was folding his tent. I believe the labels with the green stripe are from the 80's. It's been kept in my garage and has never been frozen. I still use it to this day and have no doubts of its usefulness.

                              my nxt gen 2.0 has been near freezing and also been near 115 degrees.... i wonder if this is why its leaving oily residue after i wax my car?
