The dealership once did a cleaning of my engine compartment and it was great. All the hoses were shinny black. I did some research and saw a video of engine cleaning. The guy applied some kind of degreaser and used water to hose down the entire engine. This looks too scary to be a DIY.
The engine cover looks easy to clean. I can simply remove it and clean it on a work bench. What product should I use? How about Ultimate Protectant?
You really can safetly spray your engine down with water, as long as you cover the electrical components. Really, you don't even have to do that as they are sealed up nicely, but it's silly not to as a precaution.
You can use any engine-safe degreaser, then rinse, then apply a dressing. I like a product called CD-2 Engine Detailer, which you can find at most autozones. Ultimate protectant would be a good choice too, or you could use a number of Meguiar's products like Hyper-dressing or something similar.
Second CD-2!
Just follow the directions as they are written. The stuff like to 'pond up' some, but leaves a nice crisp finish.

You may want to wrap relay cover's, fuse box, the alternator and so on to keep from damaging thing's. I have witnessed more than one detailer smoke underhood electronics on a customer's vehicle during an engine cleaning. Not a big deal to cover-up and it only add's a few minutes to your detail.
I've had excellent results with Ultimate Protectant under the hood of my '94 F150 Lightning.
UP is OK with the heat?
I live in central Arkansas where the summer reaches 100+ degrees F and 80-90% humidity. I haven't had an issue with it on hoses, fuse/relay boxes, plug wires, fresh air intake, and so on. I go over things an hour later to ensure it doesn't run/drip. I never drive on the same day I detail under the hood. I even use it on the rear wheel-well liners of my 1994 Ford F150.Originally Posted by mis3

I just used Mr. Clean to wipe down the engine compartment, followed by Ultimate Protectant.
Let's see how long UP will last...
