  • Backing plate for 6.5" Meg's foam pads

I currently have some 6.5" Meguiar's foam pads. On my DA I've been using the W67DA backing plate. I'd like to use these pads with my rotary, but I'm not certain which backing plate(s) are the correct size and number. The W67DA plate doesn't go all the way to the edge of the backing, in fact it lacks quite a bit.

Does Meguiar's make a rotary plate for the 6.5" foam that fits similar to the W67DA, and one that just goes to the edge of the backing on the 6.5" foam pads?

I recently bought 3 - W4000 wool pads and a W65 bp. I'm aware that the W68 will work fine on those wool pads as well. Will the W66 bp work properly on the W4000 pads, or are they strictly for the 7" Solo system?

What I'm wanting to do is find a rotary bp that will work equally well on the foam and the wool pads. I'm even considering returning the large W4000 pads to trade for some brand of 6" - 6.5" wool pads that can be used on both the rotary and my DA. I'm just thinking the smaller pads will allow me into less accessable areas on boats. Perhpas Lake Country or Buff and Shine offers smaller pads. I'm pretty sure Tuff Buff does also.

Since my rotary experience is limited, and I'm on a limited budget, I have some conerns about only being able to use the large w4000 pads in large areas. I'm trying to kill two birds with fewer stones by getting some 6-6.5 inch pads and some smaller 3-4 inch wool pads.

You need the W64 backing plate for the Softbuff pads when used with the rotary.

Wow! Great article and helpful chart. Exactly the information I was looking for.

I need to take a look and see what other sized of wool pads Meguiar's offers. Or find a pad chart. I'll do a search and see what I come up with and maybe post another link to this thread for others in the future.

      I wish Meguiar's made 3" and 5" pads.

      Thank you!!!!

Available as microfiber cutting/ finishing discs in both sizes 3" and 5" (to be used as part of DA Microfiber Correction System with D300 Correction Compound and D301 Finishing Wax).

You're welcome! Glad to be of service for Meguiar's and MOL!!!

But thank you Mike Stoops for writing that excellent article and providing all the resources here.

It seems like Meguiar's is offering 4 wool pads to my knowledge and they are:
          1. Cut N' Shine Wool Pad
          2. Double Sided Wool Cutting Pad (8 inches)
          3. WWHC7 Solo Wool Heavy Cutting Pad (7 inches)
          4. WWLC7 Solo Wool Light Cutting Pad (7 inches)

The link Marc provided will tell you more than you thought you possible on the subject of backing plates. There are also a couple of charts toward the bottom of the article that tell you which backing plate is best for which pad, for both rotary and DA tools.

Appreciate your input. I have the 5" MF system along with D300/301. Still need to pick up the 3" size pads. I should have clarified, but I was refering to other wool pads.

Okay...looks like they don't make any smaller wool pads. I was aware of these 4. Thank you!

Lake Country Purple Foamed Wool would be your option for smaller size (rotary or forced rotation dual action polishers only).
Hybrid natural wool will be available in smaller diameter as well later this year.

I've just been informed, by the local KOI Savage Paint Store (Meg's dealer), that the W64 backing plate has been discontinued.

This doesn't make sense considering Mr. Stoops replied to this thread and didn't mention anything about the W64 being discontinued. I wonder if the sales guy new what he was talking about? Of course, he said he was reading it off of his computer.

                  EDIT:

So I'm back to square one.
Which backing plate, after market or factory, can I use with my rotary with 6.5" Soft Buff pads?

Can someone please verify if the W64 plate is still available? I am being told that I can no longer get it locally because it's been discontinued.

Disregard, the above post. It appears that the W64 backing plate is still available as evidence here: http://www.meguiars.com/content/glob...ProCatalog.pdf

Yes, the W64 is still available. Quite often when a store stops carrying an item it will show up as "discontinued" in their system, but that sometimes just means it's been discontinued by the store, meaning the store is no longer carrying that item even though the manufacturer is still making it. That seems to be the case in this situation.
