Well then, it was just some bad hazing left over. Nice to see you managed to clear it up, which is the ultimate goal, of course. This exercise is a great one for learning how things can change in a process by altering tool speed, pad choice, and combining materials in different ways to achieve the goal. Just remember, though, that not all paint will necessarily respond the same way to the same input. Paint likes to keep us guessing, and if you can learn to think on your feet you'll be way ahead of the game!

Thank you for the tips Michael!

I forgot to upload these pictures for you.. I finally got to take some of them in daylight.

I also have been getting into learning some painting.. I painted my faded 3rd brake light panel.. Here is the before

Here is the paint I used..

Scuffed up ready for color coats and clear

Wet sand with 1500grit.. then followed up with some 2000grit. Then some ultimate compound and ultimate polish..

This is the first time I have ever got this kind of results with a rattle can.. Its just this wetsand, buffing, polishing has opened me up to a whole new world!

    I love this stuff!

    All because of this site!

    thanks again for the help!

    -Shawn

Wow! I am impressed. And this is all done with HF cheapo rotary!! Take that you snobs :-)

What settings did you finally use with the rotary? I have the same one with Meg backing plate and 6.5 inch pads.

Re: Pad used for Ultimate Polish?

    Thank you very much!

Yes this site is a great resource to get the tips from the pros!

Sontakke, The HF rotary, I never went over the setting of "2".. but keep in mind that the speed "wanders".. so I was faily diligent on adjusting the speed with my thumb while doing the buffing/polishing.

I didn't use much pressure unless I felt it needed it.. and constantly touched the panel with my other hand to feel the temperature.. As soon as it started feeling a little too warm I would move to a new spot/lessen pressure.

I just used the backing plate that came with the rotary. I have been using 7-8" pads.

Now that I feel fairly comfortable with doing this stuff.. I will be investing in a nice Makita,Meguiar's or dewalt rotary and also a nice orbital to really be able to do this much faster etc.

Thanks again for your kind words and the help guys! Can't thank you enough.. It wasn't even about saving the money doing this myself.. it was about learning a new skill and being able to say "I did this myself "

If you get a Makita you will see it is night and day difference between the 2 tools. I had a cheapo HF rotary, tossed it and got the Makita. Not even close. The speed on the Makita will not change at all on you, stays steady. I buffed black out with the Makita and a wool pad in like a hour, but i used M105. I finished it up with the PC after the initial cut was done with the rotary. Looks like a mirror.

Good job on the car, looks great!

    I'm impressed!

Youll be a dangerous person if you had a DA, Dewalt RO (or any good RO), M105, M205, MF pads, etc.....
