  • Meguiar's Plastic and Vinyl Coating vs. Ultimate Protectant

Can I expect Meguiar's Plastic and Vinyl Coating to last as long as ultimate protectant? The reason I ask is I'd like to use the plastic and vinyl coating for the cowling area and also on other textured exterior plastic. I detail my brothers car twice a year and I already use the ultimate protectant but it's a little hard to apply to the cowling as it has ridges and is a pain to get the protectant in those areas. I know these are two different products with one being an aerosol and the other being water based.

The Plastic & Vinyl Coating aerosol is very long lasting on those exterior surfaces, and no doubt is easy to get into all those tight areas because of the delivery of product via aerosol spray. You may want to do a bit of prep to the windshield prior to application, however. A bit of masking tape to hold down a couple of towels will prevent overspray that may need to be wiped off after application. Remember, being an aerosol it's going to be subject to wind blowing it around. But as long as you don't use it outside when the wind is blowing things around, and you take a quick 30 seconds or so to mask off the base of the windshield, you'll love Plastic & Vinyl Coating.

Thanks for the quick reply Michael. My main concern was longevity and as long as it doesn't wash right off after a light rain I'm happy with that. I'll take those precautions and use some towels to cover the hood as you suggested.

I had not heard of this product and am also interested in durability compared to UP.

A significant factor in the longevity of a dressing is prepping the surface properly to ensure it is clean. A product like Mirror Glaze #39 Heavy Duty Vinyl Cleaner or a light dilution of APC (10:1) with a towel does a nice job removing contamination that reduces the durability of the dressing.
