    Meguiars D171 WBD

    "Meguiars Water Based Dressing maintains an attractive luster on the dashboard, door panels, console, exterior trim, tires, leather or vinyl seats, plastic engine components, and rubber weatherstripping. The dressing has a high gloss shine when applied full strength but does not attract dust because it is water-based."

    Just got a gallon and my intended use is just for interiors and engine bay. Wanted to know from those that use it; what are your impressions?

    How about as a leather cleaner and conditioner? Looks to be safe on all surface types.

      It's suitable for all interior surfaces, including leather, but you will want to dilute it 1:1 with water to knock the shine down. If you ever find this, or any other dressing for that matter, to be shinier than you like you can easily knock down the gloss level by going over the surface a second time with a clean, dry towel.

      Now, that's not to say that this is going to be a super shiny product, but used straight it might be too glossy for some, at least immediately after application. Being water based, while suitable for exterior trim, don't expect it to last a long time as it will wash off like most typical water based dressings do. It's great in engine bays as you can basically just spray it, close the hood and walk away. As far as leather goes, it's fine for dressing leather but it's really not a cleaner. Our dedicated leather cleaners, whether in the consumer line or the new Detailer Line leather cleaner, will be much better choices.

              Although they are both dressings, WBD is geared towards volume efficiencies of a high volume detailer, auction house, dealer, etc. and provides a low cost per use as it is cheaper than M40 even before you dilute it. M40 has the durability edge as it actually seems to condition the vinyl/rubber surface, I use it for engine bays, tires, wheel wells, trim, and even soft seals around the doors/trunk/hood to keep them supple. Personally, I wouldn't try that with WBD so I would say M40 has more versatility as well.

              In my experience a single application of M40 leaves a very matte looking finish that is dry to the touch, there really isn't any gloss to speak of that I would want to reduce. For those who prefer this look like I do M40 is the perfect option. Meguiar's makes many great products but M40 has to be my all time favorite.

                Shawn's comparison of the two is pretty much spot on. M40 will also have some pretty decent cleaning ability, but on a cost per use basis it's going to be more expensive than WBD. Depending on how much you're using (your own cars, or doing this for a living) that cost differential may be a big deal or nothing at all. M40 could be considered the more "premium" of the two products if you want to look at it that way.

                  Just a quick update on Megs WBD, I did the entire entire of my work car with WBD and it came out great. I spend allot of time in this vehicle and it sometimes acts like an office. I used a 75/25 mix instead of 50/50. The WBD darkened the trim, gave it a nice gloss, made the fake walnut look like cherry, just made everything look rich and has a great scent. Any co-worker that was in my vehicle noticed and really liked the look and smell.

                  It has been 1 month and the interior still looks great and does not need a reapplication yet.

                    Thanks for the update, sounds like you found a great product to fit your needs and preferences. WBD is a product that does not see much exposure as it seems to be overshadowed by the more popular Hyper Dressing (D170), so glad to hear WBD getting kudos.
