  • M105 Ultra Cut Compound - Clear-coat paint safe???

    Hi,
Is M105 Clear-coat paint safe? Does the application method (hand, DA, Rotare etc) effect how safe (or not) it is for clear-coat paints?

    Thanks!

Meguiar's 105 is clear coat safe. Perhaps M105 is one of the best abraded products available in the market.
It's formula with super micro abrasives is ideal for removal of sand scratches and/or other blemishes.
Preparing the paint surface for an uniform look.
You can use by hand, via rotary polisher and DA polisher.

A better question may be what are you working on, or trying to do?

          Yes, a most excellent question.

While M105 is our most aggressive compound it is perfectly safe to use on clear coat. In fact, every single paint care product we make is clear coat safe. That said, regardless whether you apply it by hand, DA or rotary there are always potential issues to worry about. We've seen people rub right through their clear coat using far less aggressive products, even when working by hand. Usually that happens when they're trying to remove either a deep scratch or a bad etching from a bird dropping and they attack it with any liquid on a terry cloth applicator, and work very aggressively in a very small area for a fairly long period of time. It wasn't the product that caused the problem but rather a combination of the applicator and highly aggressive application process. Heck, you could go through your clear coat with a bit of terry cloth and a completely non abrasive liquid. Just because something is clear coat safe does not mean you can't possibly do any damage.

So, to echo Mat's question: what are you working on and what are you trying to accomplish? You might be able to do it with a much less aggressive product.

I will say this, I find M105 to be a VERY strong product if used by hand. It always looks hazy on my car if I do M105 work by hand.

However, if I use a DA polisher with yellow pad, I find it leaves a beautiful finish. Your mileage will vary greatly on the paint too.
