  • One coat solution for a very large area

I own a large houseboat with several other couples. In the spring, we are meeting at the boat (at Lake Powell), and one of the tasks is to clean up, wax/polish the entire outer surface of the boat, about 1200 square feet, I estimate. The surfaces are like on an R/V, powdercoated metal, and fiberglass. The boat will be up on stands in dry storage, so scaffolding will have to be used to reach the highest areas. Because of the requirements for scaffolding, I would like to use the right product for a one step application of cleaner/polish/wax, with rotary or D/A buffers. What is a recommendation for a product and process?

Hmm... what condition are the surfaces in?

And any machines, by hand, etc?

As Mat asked...please let us know about the surface(s) condition.

You can take a look at Meguiar's Marine products...take a run over to the home page, you should see a spot that says something about "download our catalogs."

Given the square footage you are dealing with I think you are on the right track with your thoughts on using an all-in-one product. Meguiar's Marine line offers a Cleaner Wax (#50) that looks like it might fit your needs, and it is sold in gallons so it is cost effective for your application. If D/A or rotary polishers are not available for use by everyone participating in the clean up #50 is also available in paste form, this would allow you to cater to different application methods with liquid and paste while maintaining consistency with the finished look.

As far as washing the surfaces before waxing a product such as Meguiar's Boat Wash (#43) or the higher up in the brand line Boat / RV Gel Wash (#54) are good options to consider.

Detailing.com has a very nice selection of Meguiar's Marine products for you to consider some additional products to handle areas that would not be waxed such as Non-Skid Deck Cleaner (#68) or Metal Polish (#93).

        Hope this helps.

If the surfaces are in fairly decent shape then M50 is a great choice. If you need further correction then a one step is probably not going to cut it, in which case M44 or M49 may be needed prior to an application of Flagship Premium Marine Wax. It all depends on the condition of the surface and your ultimate goal.
