  • Suggestions on 5 year old white gelcoat

    Hello,

I have a boat that is about 5 years old and need some advice on what products to use. I know it has not been waxed in atleast 2 years if not longer. Ive researched the Megs site and the forums here and just want to double check.

The boat is white and in overall pretty good condition. The sides are still pretty glossy and feel smooth, but the horizontal surfaces do have a few stains and are definately dull in comparison. I do not feel any chalking of the fiberglass.

I have a DA polisher, I just want to get some Megs Marine supplies to use with it. I was thinking of going with the #44 Color Restorer with an Orange LC pad and then the Flagship Wax with a Black LC pad.

After that for maintenence I would probably use the #50 followed with the Flagship Wax.

How does that routine sound off hand? Thanks!

Sounds like a good plan to me. Wont know if you need the stronger cleaner (#49) until you try.

Could look at the Flagship Cleaner/Wax.

You may find M44 to be too mild for the oxidized horizontal surfaces. Without seeing pictures it's a bit difficult to make a definitive recommendation, but odds are you're going to need at least M49 Oxidation Remover. Our Marine/RV field rep says that he very often just goes straight to M67 One Step Compound for dull, oxidized finishes. But usually when something that aggressive is needed the finish has degraded to a point where even the sides are looking pretty bad. Since your boat doesn't sound quite that bad off, we'd suggest you just keep M67 in the back of your mind, but go ahead and start with the M49.

Thank you for the replies, I think I will go ahead and pick up some #49 as well. I will reassess the boat condition once the cover comes off.

M49 is a great starting point.

How is the underside looking? Algae, dirt & scum?

Underside is pretty clean of any growth, it does have bottom paint on it.

Thanks again everyone for the suggestions.
