  • Meguiars-Thoughts on Ultimate wax wintertime durability

I was wondering if you have any kind of wintertime durability testing data you could share? In the northeast, we see repeated days of road salt, and other chemicals. I know Ultimate Wax is your most durable, longest lasting, best protecting LSP. On a daily driver what kind of life expectancy can one expect? The roads in Pittsburgh usually have a salty/chemical brine one drives through (and subsequently splashes all over the rocker panels, and lower doors, hood, etc) from December through February. Most days do not provide enough temperature to hand wash, maybe a total of 4-6 times during those 12 odd weeks. Very limited chances to boost the protection with either another layer of wax, or your Ultimate Quik Wax. If one prepped, waxed, etc in early December, would there be any protection left by March 1st? I understand it is a guestimate, as each car is driven in different conditions, was just looking for a ball park estimation if at all possible. Thanks, love your products!!

From what I have seen of UW, it is certainly possible for it to be there March 1st but if not a lot of cleaning is done and salt sits on there a while then I don't think it will last all the way through. I have not seen anything last all the way through a salt filled winter with minimal washings.

Shawn, I agree, and even though I have used some of the big hitters in the longevity dept (Klasse SG, Duragloss, Collinite), I like to wax my own car too often to go six months anyway. I just wondered if the Meguiars folks had any kind of data etc on what they would expect. The Ultimate Wax is just so easy to use, and during non winter months, I have found it to far outlast NXT 2.0 especially when using Ultimate Quik wax and Quik Detailer.

The reality is that if you get a lot of wet road salt on the finish, not much of anything is going to hold up through that for any length of time. Your best bet is to get that stuff off the car ASAP and be more concerned about doing that rather than whether or not there's any wax left on the car. Remember, waxes and sealants are sacrificial barriers that break down over time - how long that "time" is will depend on a lot of factors, and road salt is about the worst thing you can throw at them.

For those winter months waterless or rinseless car wash could be used, if paint condition permits to do so of course.

Only permanent coatings could provide this period of protection without re-applying them: C-Quartz, Opti Coat 2.0, etc.

I'm thinking get a couple coats of wax, whether it's UW, GC or NXT....or Collinite?
Wash with ONR once week once the salt arrives, followed by UQW/UQD....the cars will be protected.

Ult. Wash and Wax is also good in these situations.
