In case others come across this thread like I did.
I ran across this thread because I had heat issues with my new polisher. Turns out it was that I didn't put the little plastic washer between the backing pad and the buffer. The screws on the backing bad were pressing against the counterweight and causing it to not spin freely. it oscilated, but did not spin. Once I put the washer in place the buffer works fantastic! A great machine.

It only took 4 months to get it and all the supplies with it. Anyways I first used it the end of October and did my son's Pontiac Vibe GT and it was awesome. I then went to use it two weeks later and it started acting up. It would run for about 3 seconds and then trip out. Turn off, then back on and it would do it again. Every now & then it would "ramp up & down" then quit. A few times it actually stayed on like it's suppose to. I'll read up here and see what the problem could be. Probably brush related BUT c'mon, I only used it 15 minutes at the most
