  • Can I polish/wax my windshield?

Years ago, I was told not to use polish or wax on my windshield, as it might cause streaking in the rain. Is this still true?

Yes, we still recommend that you not do this. Many people seem to like Ultimate Quik Detailer or even Ultimate Quik Wax on their glass, but we still caution against over use of these products, especially on the windshield.

The reason we don't recommend this is because so many people have this attitude of "if some is good, more is better" and they end up seriously over using products. And the big problem is that they don't realize how heavily they've over used it until they get into trouble. This is true not only for the topic at hand, but general use of waxes, dressings, polishes, etc.

Polish wont help your glass much.

Some people like wax, some dont. I like RainX, some dont. Really just have to try it and see if it works for you.

Just as I thought. Thanks much! I'll stick with using Rain-X once and a while.

You can certainly clay your glass.. that always helps.

+1 to that...a bit of irony...'it makes is smooth as glass'. It really makes a difference, just like on paint..takes away that gritty feeling. Or try dedicated glass polish.

Never thought of using clay on the windshield. I might try that. Never heard of dedicated glass polish.

Try the clay..I'll bet you will be happy with the results. Not sure if Meguiar's makes a glass polish..others do...but no free advertising for them on this forum from me

The next time I use the clay bar I'll give it a try. Thanks much.

For what it is worth, I wax my windows and love it..rarely have to turn on the wipers, the wind just blows the rain off. Never liked RainX.

I have tried UQW on my windows, and I do not like it.

It is nowhere as clear and streak free as NXT Glass Cleaner.

If you clean your windows whenever they get dirty with NXT, I find it keeps them clean and the water runs right off in rain, just my experience I point out.

I think it's because keeping it clean regularly (basically anytime you drive and anything gets on it) just prevents things from building up, and that helps the rain make its way off.

I suppose there could also be a small amount of something in the NXT Glass that helps with this since NXT Glass cleaner does also help prevent fogging on interior glass.

Re: Can I polish/wax my windshield?

Been a rain-x fan for years, just never seems to last that long. After switching to UW&W soap I found it has a similar (and much shorter lived) effect, used UQW on the windshield today, curious to see results.

ON an aside, I supopse claying before rain-x would likely result in improved durability as well as function?

I am a believer in claying your windows. I also like to "spray wax" them, but be sure to buff them extensively since you may see some hazing in certain conditions (mainly humidity-related)

I agree. Clay then wax every now & then.

I have polished glass on other cars with success too...

The silver one demands nothing and it looks just fine. I think the black vehicle is taking advantage of me, and the silver car is more my style. We can go out for a drive without her makeup and she looks fine. If I want to take the black one out, it is three or four hours in the "bathroom" to get ready.
