Requesting advice on proper products for new car with new ResistALL sealant

Hey all,

I just recently (04/20/11) bought a new 2011 Mitsubishi Lancer GTS. I also had the dealer put Resistall paint sealant/protectant on it (04/26/11). I asked the tech when I picked up my car how to care for it and he said not to do anything with the finish in regards to cleaning it for 2 weeks (unless I got bombed by a bird) and then I should use just water on the car for another 4 weeks before I could wash it. I called the folks at ResistAll because I wanted to know what types of car wash soap are safe and they said that any soap that is clear coat safe is okay to use. I also asked them if I could use car wax on it and they said as long as it’s Carnauba based wax. So my question is.

1. What type of Meguiar’s car wash should I use or would you recommend?
2. What type of Carnuaba based wax should I use as well?
3. Are the spray touch up waxes okay to use with a clear coat as well.
4. Are the touch up spray waxes safe to use (from what I have read I should wax the car maybe 2 times a year but use the touch up sprays for quick shines. I would like to know what Meguiar touch up sprays are safe to use)

I really want to keep the shiny octane blue finish of my car looking great. The car is kept in a garage at night but it is out in the elements while I am at work and I live and work in San Diego Ca. I don’t live close to the ocean but I will get the sun beaming down on my car most of the day.

I'm curious why they specified only carnuba-based wax... Maybe their coating is similar to a synthetic wax/sealant and this will provide the layered wax people around here seem to go for?

Hi Buick91,

From what I have read about ResistALL it is a synthetic coat. I have read different reviews about it. I might have been taken for a dealer trick to get it put on but it’s done now. The customer service rep from ResistAL did say to you a Carnauba based wax though.

Well, a quick glance at the manufacturer's website didn't exactly give me confidence in the product to say the least. As a reformed detailer who got my start in the detailing department of a car dealer, I have little faith in these types of products as they *generally* tend to be nothing more than a way to improve profit margins dramatically.

That said, I am not a chemist nor do I know the specifics of this product, what it is, or how it works...BUT... a few things they said don't make sense to me as a detailer. One, the whole concept of saying something needs to be "clear coat safe" is nothing more than a marketing ploy... any CAR soap will be clear coat safe. Period.

Secondly, the concept that the wax needs to be carnuaba-based makes no sense to me. Unless they developed a sealant product that deteriorates when contacted with other synthetic sealant products (which is unlikely and illogical), it should make no difference which type of wax you use aside from knowing if your wax is a cleaner wax or not.

In theory, a cleaner wax could remove some of the sealant with abrasive or chemical cleaning action - that is, assuming the "sealant" is A.) Actually there, and B.) Giving any more protection than the wax you are applying.

See if they can tell you how their sealant is applied to the vehicle and what it is based on. That *might* help some.

Good to see someone down in my area. I live in Otay Ranch in Chula Vista. I see you are from El Cajon.

In regards to your above breakdown. From what I have read many car dealerships will try to add on this paint sealer (not sure if ResistALL is the only one) as an option to protect your cars paint. After I purchased my car and got it done I did read from some sites that having it added to your car at purchase is just a way for the dealer to make more money but like I said before what is done is done. I have also read reviews that it is a very good sealer and protectant. The big issue might be if one was to get it done by the dealer or by themselves through a contractor.

In regards to you questions about how it is applied I will ask the rep and get back with you. I will also ask why it has to be a Carnauba based wax in regards to you questions.

Well I sent an e-mail to the ResistALL customer service agent ( the same one that has been advising me in regards to what I can and can’t use with the ResistALL paint sealer). I asked him about the questions in regards to why it had to be carnauba-based, how was it applied and what it was based on, etc. He replied back this time telling me that a product specialist will be calling me. I guess I started to ask questions that were too complex for him to tell me via e-mail.

UPDATE -

Well I just got off the phone with a specialist one of the specialists of the ResistALL products. The guy was very helpful and explained to me how the product works and they just recommended Carnauba wax but you can use any type you want. He told me that ResistALL is a special co-polymer protector that seals the paint. He just said to avoid wax cleaners and harsh detergents of course. So pretty much I can use whatever I want as a wax.

He advised me not to wipe off dirt using a spray bottle of water and a micro fiber cloth as it can push dirt into the surface. He did actually recommend I use Mcguires Quick Detail Spray to touch up areas.

Living in San Diego I just deal with dust mainly that gets on my vehicle during the day and I like to use something to wipe it down at night when it’s garaged so it’s dust free in the morning.

these are basically insurance policies against paint failure. I would use whatever you feel is best after reading the forums.
