  • M105 vs Ultimate Compound

Hi Is there a huge difference between Ultimate Compound
Item # G17216 vs. Ultra Cut Compound
    Item # ULTRA 32 ??

Are they very much the same apart from bottle size ?

Which one is safe to be used on plastic and which will give a better shine on paint?

Both can be used on plastic (like headlights).

I would go with Ultimate Compound before M105 since it is less aggressive. What are you working on? By hand or machine?

      Re: M105 vs Ultimate Compound

Ultimate Compound is derived from M105 but is a much more user friendly product when used with a D/A buffer - it gives a much longer buffing cycle and a dramatic reduction in dust. We use it all the time in our Saturday Classes and Thursday Night Open Garages and it's pretty rare that we can not correct a situation, regardless of the paint we're working on. There is no doubt that M105 is more aggressive than UC; M105 is simply the most aggressive compound we make. Because of that alone it should not be everyone's "go to" product for every detail.

Which one gives a better shine on paint will depend on the paint. Last night we worked on three cars with it during our Open Garage - two of the cars responded beautifully to it; it removed the defects and left the paint with a very high gloss. On a third it very quickly removed the defects but it hazed the paint slightly.

What sort of plastic are you going to be working on? Both products can be used on clear plastics like head lights and tail lights, but neither is truly suitable for use on colored plastics.

        Re: M105 vs Ultimate Compound

I will be working with hand but could use a foam pad or whatever.. I'm newbie so I dont realy have many tools around apart from a drill which I could attach the buffer onto

I'm trying to clear some 2000 grit scratches on my plastic headlights from an Acura TSX

I wetsanded using 2000 grit to remove some residue and I've just polished and buffed with scratchx and plastx 2.0

However, the hairline scratches are still visible under sunlight and looking very close

Here's my thread if you would like to see some pics..

Will take some after progress photos soon

Either product should be able to pull out 2000 grit sanding marks from headlight lenses. We use PlastX to remove 3000 grit and it's nowhere near as aggressive as either of those two.

I'm surprised at the number of folks that resort to sanding their headlight lenses before using a less aggressive compound. I recently detailed my brothers Lexus...he lives in Tucson. The sun had made them pretty cloudy. He was thinking about getting his lenses sanded and I said let's try the UC first. Used the DA and an 8207 pad and he was shocked how clear they came out. They looked new and saved him some money!

Okay, so I was using the wrong product then

I was using scratchx/plastx to remove 2000 grit.. but its not too bad tho

              Guess I'll try some UC

I used PlastX after 2000 grit wet sanding and every time I didn't have any issues
may be your plastic is diff than on my headlights?

hairline scratch has to be removed at 1000 grit, 2000 grit makes it perfect milk and if it's wet after 2000 grit you should see it very clear and no any scratches at all
