Advanced Class - Pictures & Comments
    Meguiar's Car Care 201
    Saturday August 7, 2010

We have to say that the enthusiasm and passion displayed by everyone at this class was just incredible! It's so much fun doing these classes when you guys are this into it - so thanks for that!

    On with the pix -

Once we finished with the classroom theory portion of the day it was out to the garage to put new found knowledge to the test. With all our tools organized and ready to go we set out to see what happens with real paint.

We start with some D/A damp sanding using 6" foam finishing discs in 1500 and 3000 grit until we had a nice and uniform finish.

Here we even sanded over the contour lines of this hood. But.... and this is important..... we used foam backed finishing discs and NOT film backed sanding discs. We also had a 1/4" foam interface pad on the D/A sander. These combined to allow us to safely go over contours even this sharp - within reason, of course. This is not a license to go crazy and not consider the potential downside, but it does give a huge safety cushion.

And just to contrast the foam backed finishing disc & foam interface pad safety factor with just a film backed sanding disc and no interface pad, we used the latter combo in the same spot. It took just a few seconds to go through the paint - far less time than we spent with the safety cushion in place.

With the lesson on how not to do things over, it was time to see about removing those sanding marks. A wool pad, rotary buffer, M105 and 1800 rpm was our starting point - after we spurred the pad.

A little discussion on how to properly pick up that bead of product laying on the paint, and then on with the compounding.

Looks pretty good here, but a closer inspection shows that we need at least another pass to get them all out.

We also demonstrated how quickly you can generate heat with a foam cutting pad. This was a matter of seconds to gain the temperature shown.

With the compounding complete and the sanding marks gone, it was time to refine the finish. M205 on a W9207 foam finishing pad at 1000 rpm was our starting point.

That doesn't look too shabby, does it?

We even rolled the hood out into direct sunlight to get a super critical look.

Demonstrations done, it was time for everyone to get in on the fun.

    Oops.

OK, so maybe an oops here and there, but look at this clarity when everything was said and done!!

This was our last Advanced Class for the year but we'll be back with more in 2011.

Wow. Great classes that Meguiars puts out. Look at the finish that hood displays after being hit with sand paper. Unreal! One of these days I hope to attend this class.

The lessons learned at the last Advanced Class of 2010 were priceless!

By the end of the day, I *significantly* reduced the amount of splatter I was spraying everywhere.

That skill seems to come naturually to Stoops:

Does Meguiars not require the use of safety glasses when polishing/wetsanding. I never see anyone wearing them in the classes you offer

Anyhow, looks like a super fun time was had by all

We don't require it, no, but we do have safety glasses and hearing protection available for anyone who wants to use them.

Mike - great class on Saturday. Learned a few things of immediate benefit like using foam interface pads during sanding.

Now how do I justify getting a larger air compressor to run a pneumatic DA sander...
