D151 Paint Reconditioning Cream Question

Ok, I'm looking to pick up some D151 to speed up my daily driver details. Most people don't want to spend the money for the extra steps for a full detail. My question is what is the duration for the protection after using this? 1 2 3 months etc...

I don't mind topping it but I'd like to use that as an up-sell. I would like to tell them it will last "this" long and tell them I could seal it and it will last "this" long....

First, let me say D151 is a really awesome product and you will love to use it and the results you achieve.

As for your question though, there are so many factors that will effect the longevity of the product. Proper prep of coure is necessary and one of the most important steps. But you also have to factor in where the vehicle is parked, outdoors all the time or garaged, daily driver or weekend warrior. What kind of climate? Hot and sunny, more rain than not, snow, salt, etc. Also, is the owner of the vehicle properly maintaining it? Correct washing methods, washing frequently, using the correct soap? I use D151 a lot and normally top with a sealant. I would try to stay away from saying, "ok, you are good for 6 months right now" Because you can never tell.

Man you hit it on the head! I think about longevity of waxes/sealants but that's me taking care of my own cars. I do have to think more in the customers shoes though. I see the condition of the cars before I work on them and the when I'm finished. I know if I see it again, its going to look like I never touched it. That's the one part about detailing that's tough, knowing you fix it up just so it can get trashed again. Job security?

There really is no set answer. To many variables.

Having gone through a gallon and a half myself I have to say that generally speaking the protection left behind from D151 is not sufficient or long-lasting enough. Yes, left to haze it'll leave behind some protection, but I always top up my 1-product details with another wax-based LSP (not saying 1-step, since D151 is incredible versatile in application methods (wool, cut, polish and glaze-pads can be used)), and I absolutely love the stuff.

Remember that D151 was specifically formulated for high volume reconditioning facilities where the main concern is fast correction and some gloss enhancement along with a bit of protection, all in a single step. It was never intended to be a product for the highly discerning detailer seeking a truly high end finish with long lasting protection. Yes, it can yield an incredible finish under the right circumstances, but at an MSRP of $35/gallon there are going to be some compromises compared to, say, the combination of M205 and NXT 2.0.

The cut of D151 and M205 are pretty similar (when used identically - same pad, same pressure, etc) but M205 costs as much per quart as D151 does per gallon! And NXT is half that price for just 18 ounces!!

So, keeping D151 in the proper context it's a fantastic product. Just don't expect too much more from it than what (and who) it was designed for.

I mean, will there be any similarities in cutting action and glosss?

There is a similarity between D151 and M66 only in so much as both can be called all-in-one type products. But D151 is suitable for use with a rotary buffer and wool pad for much higher cut than M66 can give. You can also use D151 much less aggressively, like with a polishing pad on a DA. If used under identical conditions (same tool, same pad, same speed, same pressure, same paint) you'll probably still get more cut out of D151 but maybe a slightly better finish out of M66.

I have noticed a little of the same things Mike. However, with just recently starting to use D151 (I've always used M66 in the past and really like it), I can't attestTFT its longevity. If left under the exact same circumstances, which one of these two would last longer in protecting the paint, or are they relatively similar?

I was thinking that once I get my cars to where I am 100% happy, in regards to swirls, minor defects....would using 151 or 66 once a month with a black finishing pad maintain the swirl free paint, assuming I wash correctly. I figure the protection on either 151 or 66 would last a month, I do plan on using UQW in between using 151/66

I would think #66 for that sort of thing.

You may find that a cleaner/wax with UQW every week lasts longer than a month.

In the same boat, so I use D151 and then top it with Duragloss 105 or Collonite 845. If you want to stick with Megs try Megs#21 SS 2.0.
