Re: Does meguiar's products have silicone or not?

Some of our products do, some don't. It is very difficult to find a wax or sealant from anyone that does not contain at least some silicone. There are a couple of products out there, but that seriously limits your choices.

Silicone has a very bad reputation that is simply not deserved. Silicone is an inert ingredient that is added to a product to enhance or modify a characteristic of another ingredient. This can be gloss but it can also be simply ease of application or ease of removal. The term "silicone" is extremely broad, sort of like "plant". Lettuce, tomato, onion and poison ivy are all plants, but you wouldn't put the last one in a salad. Basically the same holds true with silicones - there are good and bad varieties, or even just some that won't help with a specific function you're trying to accomplish. But they certainly are not all bad, they won't make your dashboard crack, or your tires rot, or your paint fade or become dull.

Here's how I always answer questions about silicone or ANY ingredient in a formula... the 3 P's

When a chemist includes an ingredient in a formula, it's usually
        • A benefit to the process
        • A benefit to the product
        • A benefit to the person

        And it's usually both reasons.

They wouldn't include it unless it helped the product, process or person... and usually it's helping all three.

I have an article on Autopia called,

The Role Silicone Plays in Car Care Formulas

Can't give you the link as Autopia has been hacked lately and I'm not sure of the status at this point in time.

Agreed, certainly components be it car care products, car parts, mods, food ingrediates, whatever! At some point people tend to agree with people that know more then them and assume all the info is accurate.

Like said there are benefits and the component allows for more flexible product. Heck if it better protects the car and does not harm me or the car doing it. Go for it.
