  • 1966 Comet Capri - Xtreme Makeover Rustoleum Paint

I picked up this car for a steal but it had major surface rust. So after tuning the engine, doing a complete tune up on it and makeing sure everything was sound I decided its time for paint before next summer. So after much reading and watching of video's I started the much talked about Rustoleum $50 paint job. I had 2 months into thought on the color. It took me forever and I picked one I liked. I'm glad because its working well.

I have just started this project this weekend so here are the picture of what I have done.

The front end I am about to start:

    1 Coat

    1 Coat

    2 Coats

ended up with BAD runs from the paint rollers

So at this point I decided to do a foam brush on the car...i got better results and better coverage.

3rd coat on the fender to cover the runs

    4 coats

More to come when I add to the pieces to start.

Thanks. I was getting a little discouraged. People thinking its stupid or doesn't/wont look right. I am also worried its not comming out right. I plan to try once more with a roller. If I get bubbles results I will not be a happy camper.

thanks cnfowler. That was the first post I actually read when I started this project. Along with the many google searches and other forums AND youtube videos.

I wanted to make sure it would come out right before I even attempted. I will revisit it though to see if I am missing anything out of there maybe I didn't read it to well.

What type of roller were you using? Did you thin the Rustoleum? What ratio?

These roll on paint jobs always interested me.

I really want to get an old bug (like Nick) and do this to it, and then wetsand it to get the nicest paint job I can. Would be a fun project.

I did this paint job on my son's Ford F150 Pick-up Front edge of hood!! It came out extremely well!! I did learn a couple of things along the way. #1 Mix paint Per the temperature you are working in I do not remember the post or link that explained it but it maybe in the one Colin gave you! #2 Do not let the paint run if it does it is too thin of a mix ,you will just end up sanding most of it off. #3 I painted a coat in the afternoon then in the morning then sanded afternoon then painted afternoon painted morning then sanded REPEAT until about 10 to 12 coats on area of vehicle allow to cure for about 2 Days then take the D/A to it and you will be excited by the results! #4 Sand evenly watch yourself on any edges they are tricky go lightly or you will sand thru your paint!!!!! Best of luck on your endevor of RUSTOLEUM PAINT JOB PS. Do not keep working the wet paint it will leave bubbles , if some are present pop with a needle or pin pain to get rid of bubbles as you end up sanding most of that coat off!!!!
