  • Best No Slag Tire Dressing...

I'm looking for the best, no slag, glossy tire dressing. It drives me crazy to use tire dressings, only to have it spray off the tires and onto the car when driving. I always let the car sit for at least a few hours after application of the dressing, but it doesn't seem to do any good. I also want to make sure that the dressing doesn't damage or "brown" the rubber. I need suggestions from experts.

well if your looking for the best dressing that wont sling, it would probably have to be one of the tire gel's like the hot shine gel or endurance gel. however they key to preventing sling on any tire with any dressing is to come back after 10-15 minutes after its dried and give it a final wipe down with a clean rag.

Thanks for the reply. And how well do the "clean and shine" dressings work? Also, product names would help.

Sorry. I meant the products that spray on and they are supposed to clean and shine the tire.

oh im not really framiliar with such products...ive always used two seperate products. one to clean the tires, and one to dress. from experience, ive learned 2 seperate products work better than an "all in one" product

Re: Best No Slag Tire Dressing...

Out of all of the tire dressing's I've ever used, I've only had sling from dressings when either I put too much on or I didn't let it dry enough before I started to drive. As for the tire foam products (the ones that clean and shine), I use those regularly as well, and again, never have a problem as long as I don't start driving right after I've applied it.

Re: Best No Slag Tire Dressing...

I use soap and water to clean the tires... every once in awhile some Megs APC at 7:1. I don't leave the APC on for very long, perhaps just the time it takes to spray all the tires. I'm not a big fan of removing all the natural protectors from the tire.

I've used 303 and VinylX in the past as they have good UV protectors. Now I have switched to HyperDressing. I like HD as it can be mixed to great more or less gloss. While it's fairly durable I've read here that Megs All Season Dressing probably lasts a little longer.

As far as sling... I've read this from many people but I've _never_ had the problem. I use a foam applicator to apply, wait a few hours and then lightly wipe off the excesses. The exception is HD... I can _lightly_ spray this on directly, let it dry and then wipe off the excesses. There is just no need to hose down the tire with product and leave it on. This is probably why is slinging off but it also picks up dirt from the road.

I really don't like the gels. I think they pick up to much dirt. But that is just my opinion.

The way I prevent sling is after I dress the tires. I go back, 20-30 minutes later and remove any excess product. I find doing it this way saves a lot of work down the road.

When you mentioned "brown the rubber". Are you referring to the natural action of your tires blooming. I always thought that was the natural characteristics of a tire out gassing. Not from some form of protectorant applied.

I know one of my problems is that I really like as glossy a tire as I can get. To that end, I look for dressings that "dry" on the tire, because whenever I wipe after application, I lose the gloss. I also like a dressing that is water soluble so that it's easy to wash off and tends not to build up gunk on the tire. I just tried a gel, so we'll see if it slings.
Seems I've had tires that brown and one's that didn't. I assumed it was the dressing that caused it because now there are non-browning dressings. Better ask an expert on this one.

The "browning" is from the tire blooming as JA mentions. Basically this help protect the tire from ozone and UV. That is why I don't like to use aggressive cleaners on tires as it removes this protection. I think people tend to use aggressive cleaners mainly because of the excessive dressing that they use. It picks up and bakes on all kinds of crud.

But for most people a tires tread will wear out before ozone or UV causes any problems. Heck, if you drive a Focus like I do, the tires will wear out every 20,000 miles.

Re: Best No Slag Tire Dressing...

Depending on how you apply a tire dressing, any tire dressing, it can either sling all over the place or not at all. You can make any tire dressing sling, and you can make any tire dressing not sling.

Many tires today have textured lines or other graphics on the sidewalls and these can really hold product in - until the tire spins fast enough that physics takes over and the product can no long cling to the surface. The only way to prevent this is to wipe off the excess product after it has been allowed to sit and penetrate for several minutes first. Certainly some products dry more thoroughly than others do, but a heavy application is sort of asking for trouble. Better to apply two thin layers than a single thick one. Best of all, a few minutes after applying any tire dressing come back over the tire with an old (but clean) terry cloth towel and wipe off the excess. Take note of any textured areas on the sidewall that may be trapping excess product.

As for any browning you may be seeing, that is not the fault of the tire dressing - any tire dressing, whether a Meguiar's product or someone elses. The browning you're seeing (actually called blooming) is the anti ozonant component built into the tire leaching to the surface in order to protect the sidewall from UV exposure. The level of anti ozonants varies from tire to tire, brand to brand, but all tires have it in them. Regular cleaning of the tire with soap and water and a stiff brush will remove this. If you never actually clean your tires and the blooming starts to build up, it will be loosed and become very noticeable when a solvent based dressing or a cleaner/dressing is applied. But that's just the cleaners releasing it from the surface, not actually causing it to happen.

Well, I may have just found the product I was looking for. Yesterday, I tried Eagle One, No Drip Tire Shine Gel. It promises no sling on the spray bottle. I applied it yesterday and drove the car this morning, with no sling appearing on body or fender well. I'm real happy about that. The amount of shine is just what I was looking for...more shine than a satin, but less shine than a gloss. If this gel keeps performing this way, I'll stick with it. I also have a bottle of Zaino Z16 coming, so I'll certainly try it, but at $23 shipped vs about $6 for the gel, I may have to stick with the gel.

Not an expert, but quite a few have responded already. I found a post about browning (which is a good thing and prevents damage). To paraphrase a part of it:

"Antiozonant is an ingredient that helps to prevent the exterior rubber surface from cracking, checking, oxidizing, and deteriorating. The rubber is designed in such a way as to constantly work its way to the outside of the tire.... After the antiozonant works its way to the outside of the tire and is exposed to the ozone in the air, it turns brown. The technical term for this effect is blooming."

                              Also this recent thread,

                              And an excerpt from it...

                              From the FAQ here,

                              http://meguiars.com/faq/index.cfm?fa...ection=_59#_59

Most people don't give a lot of thought to their tires except for how they look. Truth be known, your tires are designed to perform under extreme conditions of heat via kinetic energy transfer, high speeds for long periods of time and incredible forces of torque and flexing. That's a lot to ask from a chunk of rubber, inflated with air like a cream filled donut.

The science behind the modern rubber formulas used by major tire manufactures today is both complex and interesting. The rubber itself contains and ingredient called Antiozonant.

Antiozonant is an ingredient that helps to prevent the exterior rubber surface from cracking, checking, oxidizing, and deteriorating. The rubber is designed in such a way as to constantly work its way to the outside of the tire and as such, continually replenish the exterior surface with fresh antiozonant.

After the antiozonant works its way to the outside of the tire and is exposed to the ozone in the air, it turns brown. The technical term for this effect is blooming.

This is why you see a brown film on the surface your tires. You can wash your tires with soap or an all-purpose cleaner and remove this film, but in a few weeks, it's back. That's because the antiozonant continually works its way to the outside of the tires every time you drive your car.

Thus before applying a dressing you really need to do a thorough job of cleaning the outer surface of the tire to remove any spent antiozonants as well as any previously applied dressing and this will prepare the rubber to accept a fresh application of tire dressing.

Besides the rays then theirs the heat created by the sun to the surface and the environment. The worst areas for drying and cracking are places were the tires are exposed the extreme sun for a majority of the year. For example out here in the desert where I live the sun pretty much deteriorates everything that's not covered up and protected.
