Re: My M16 Paste Wax Finally Arrived

I'm not chemist, but I believe as long as the tins are sealed, your wax will remain in "pudding state". The only way for it to harden is to let the air reach the product.

When I got my tins, one of them was 60% melted. Instead of using the boiling method, I made sure the lid was on tight and shook the bejeezus out of the can. Eventually, everything was a liquid state, enough for me to pour into a glass if I wanted to. I've set the tin top over my wax in my basement and its setting up quite nice....slow as molasses, but good.

I highly doubt these are bad tins of M16, but anytime you have a wax based product sitting in the summer heat, it will melt. These were shipped from the Deep South, for those who have never visited, it's HOT and HUMID. Chances are these were melted a long time back and just need a little TLC to be good as new.

Re: My M16 Paste Wax Finally Arrived

I'm sure that Meguiar's would not recommend me to melt the wax down, however this is something that I wanted to try. So I accepted the risk that it could possibly ruin the wax or it may not work, and gave it a try. I heated the wax just enough to melt it down to a liquid form and mixed everything up. The wax never even got close to hot enough to boil. After cooling, it set up nice and so far I see no negative effects and the wax seems to work nicely.

I'm not saying that you should go and melt your wax down. This is something that I chose to do on my own and decided to share the process. If anyone else decides that they want to try the same thing, that is up to them and they assume any risk to them or their product (if there is any) in doing so, just like I did.

These are all excellent points, and very well put. Obviously Meguiar's is not going to recommend you melt your wax, or even melt and blend two different waxes (not that anyone would actually do that, right Chris??? ) but at the same time we obviously can't stop from doing so if you feel the need. But doing so with care, as outlined above - ie just enough heat to melt the wax and no more. Excessive heat will likely cause certain "carrier" ingredients to flash off, potentially making the product difficult to use. Will it harm the product to the point where protection or longevity will be compromised? Hard to say...... since it's not even close to a "normal procedure" we've probably never even tested for it. Does logic tell you that it could compromise the product?

Mike, what about the pudding-like consistency of the M16 we have bought? Has the wax gone bad? Will it work okay for us? Is there anything we can do to restore it to the way it should be?

Odds are the pudding like consistency is due to heat exposure during shipping. It seems only a small percentage of you have experienced this out of the several hundred cans that have shipped. The steps outlined by Mister B seem to work well for him.

You have to wonder if any other ebay seller has ever generated 35 pages of discussion on a forum before!

I ordered some off Ebay and it arrived today. It also looked like pudding. I put it in the fridge this afternoon and it solidified. Is that OK?

Got some little free time today so here goes. I ordered 2 cans (couldn't resist the bargain) and it came in mushy like consistency. Remixed it under the sun, then stuck it in my wine chiller for a day so and here's how it looks now. Still a little bit mushy but to my surprise, its softer then my nxt 2.0 paste. *LOL* But still does function well though. Haven't tested the durability from these cans. I believe it should perform similarly with my old can of M16.

                    Mine is also melted

But whats wrong with using it that way?

What's the big deal about making it uniform and flat ?

Re: My M16 Paste Wax Finally Arrived

I got my two tins today and they were also melted.

I ordered a tin about a year ago from a different vendor and it arrived in this melted condition. I'm pretty sure that it is something in the shipping process that does this. This tin was almost the beige color that NXT paste wax is.

My two tins here were purple which seems pretty normal. I shook them up just to make sure any separation of chemicals got mixed back together. It seemed like in both there was still a fairly solid chunk of paste in the middle that hadn't melted.

I'm letting them sit in the fridge for a couple hours, to help them solidify. I may put them in the freezer for 10 minutes, but I'm still debating that.

I once put swirls in my paint just to see what it looked like.

                      I don't always detail cars, but when I do, I prefer Meguiar's.

Re: My M16 Paste Wax Finally Arrived

The previous state of the wax makes it hard to apply to any surface as in its i)too mushy and ii) there's solvent/water floating on the surface of the wax (my case). You want your app. pad to get contact to a flat and solvent/water free state as to ensure you can easily lay it thin.

                        Hope that helps.

Yeah, I know... But I know of a few members who have seen me use some of it with great success!

There are some batches of M16 that contain more solvent than others. The wax in my main tin is rock hard, while I have some that are like pudding.

The double burner trick is the easiest way to combine any excess solvent or return the wax to its original state. During the process of heating, a little of the solvent will evaporate. This will make the wax slightly harder. However, I have never had an issue with a wax that has been reheated.

So after shaking mine up and putting them in the fridge for a while, they seemed to have solidified a little, but not quite as much as it looks like some of your have since you heated and let it cool. There also seems to be a little amount clear liquid separation that is sitting on top of the wax.

Mike Stoops, is it possible to talk to a chemist and see what the best way to re-mix this wax is? I'm still hesitant on heating it, but I feel like I may need to do that and stir it up to make sure everything mixes properly, then let it sit out to cool.
