How to use an orbital buffer with Ultimate Compound?

Hi, I'm trying to restore my car with Ultimate Compound, but by hand I'm getting very tired and a good result is very hard to get.
I don't have a DA polisher, but I can borrow a random orbital buffer, the classic two-handles 3000rpm buffer, you said me in a recent post that is only suitable for waxing, but I want to try.

The only problem is: wich kind of pad has to be used? The Meguiar's ones don't fit because they are small. The buffer comes with a simil-wool pad and a cloth pad (something like a bath towel), are they suitable to be used?

Most here would tell you to skip the efffort including myself. But if you want to try it you are free to do so. Problem is that the Random Orbital Buffer spin will get severly impacted as soon as you apply pressure rendering its work useless.

You can buy bonets at your favorite autopart store. Just measure the diameter of the ROB and head to the store. Typically ROB's don't allow you to interchange pads only the bonet that goes on top. You can buy Microfiber or Terry Cloth in the stores.

Of course a DA polisher is much much better, but it seems that they basically have the same working action. Orbital buffer is only slower, bigger, and less manoeuvrable.

They are similar, but the primary difference is power. A Fiat Grande Punto and a Ferrari 599 GTB Fiorano are similar in that they have 4 tires, a steering wheel and an internal combustion engine. But which one will lap the circuit at Monza the fastest?

With the traditional orbital buffer, the power is so low that in most cases it simply can't do anywhere near the level of correction a good D/A buffer can. "Most cases" means that there may be times it can - times when you're dealing with very soft paint. But paint that soft is generally very easy to correct by hand. We had this situation in last weekend's Saturday Detailing 101 class; we were able to get excellent results using Ultimate Compound by hand on a Honda S2000 because the paint was very soft. There is a good possibility that an orbital buffer would have done an acceptable job on this paint.

But that type of situation is quite rare. Does that mean you shouldn't try? Of course not. Just have realistic expectations that it may not be very effective and you won't be disappointed if it does not work. If you find the orbital buffer gives you a result equal to what you currently get by hand, then that's great (because the buffer won't get tired!). The odds may be against you, but you won't know for sure unless you try.

Mike,I get good correction by hand on my black Honda using the old ScratchX.......It is a really soft paint!

As what i know here at my place. Japanese car seems to have soft paint. Not that really soft but quite soft paint. even using Rotary we dont really put much pressure on it. And sometimes it get gummy when the climate is hot. Using 105 and 205 itself we never do big area. just small small areas because just with a few passes it tend to get dry really fast. Imagine if you do like half the hood so big. some of the part will get dry very fast.

So to deal with it we had to do small working area at a time.

To me Honda does have soft paint even toyotas here in my country have soft paints.

My car seems to have an HARD paint, because it is very hard to get a good result by hand!!! It simply broke your arms!! It is a French car.

Then you should get yourself a rotary buffer then to play with. You should love it.
