  • Meguiars Hot Shine Tire Spray left a nice hot yellow stain?

Hey, I used the "Hot Shine Tire spray" and while driving a bit got on the car paint. Any where it touched plastic it has stained it yellow. I tried Step 1(paint cleaner) from Meguiars and the quick detailing spray and it did not remove it. I've used other brands of tire shine before that have got on the paint a bit but did not leave any permanent marks.

How do I get it off?

    Thanks

Might wanna try some APC and a cotton towel and a little passion.

Wait, I'm a bit confused... you mentioned it got on your paint, but then you said it stained the plastic- just to be clear, which one is it?

Did it stain the paint, the plastic, or both?

I find that strange.I've put Hot shine on ABS plastic and it makes it shinier.

It stained the paint on the plastic body parts. The stuff that got on the metal body parts wiped off without issue. I'm at work right now but I can take a picture when I get home to show you.

I cleaned it off a few hours later when I pulled over and saw it on the side of my car.

What kind of All-purpose-cleaner should I use? I don't want to damage it more with using some really harsh.

APC is All Purpose Cleaner and Meguiar's is safe on just about everything (actually, I don't know anything it's not safe on). But just to be safe test it on a small spot first to see how it reacts.

I'm just guessing here, but it looks like some brown you see when you clean your tires got mixed in with the Tire Shine when it slung onto the plastic. That could be what is causing the staining.

If you don't have any APC on hand try using some cleaner wax and a foam pad.

I haven't found the Meguiars APC anywhere here yet. So I will try some stuff again tonight (quick detail-er, clay bar, scratch X, step-1 cleaner).

Have you tried washing it with just car wash soap yet?

I once put swirls in my paint just to see what it looked like.

                      I don't always detail cars, but when I do, I prefer Meguiar's.
                      Remove swirls my friends.

Good luck with what you're going to try.

As for finding Meg's APC here in Ontario...don't hold your breath. I couldn't even get a simple bottle of Utimate Compound here. Apparently UC is one of Meg's products which it doesn't/can't sell in Canada. Luckily I found an Ebay seller in Michigan with good prices and shipping rates and got my UC last night in the mail You can also try eshine.ca for Meg's APC. Cheers.

Go with the ScratchX first as it's a paint cleaner with a very mild abrasive and you've got some sort of staining in the paint.

What's really odd here is that you mention getting some sling of the tire shine product onto various panels of the vehicle, yet this yellow staining is only on the plastic panel close to the tires. It's odd because, regardless of whether the panel is steel or plastic (or aluminum, carbon fiber, etc) the paint is essentially the same so it should respond uniformly to any product applied or otherwise deposited on it. If it didn't stain the other panels it really shouldn't be staining the panels closer to the wheel - make sense? Are you seeing this on both sides of the vehicle, or just one? Just wondering if the staining issue might be related to something you ran over, kicked up, etc rather than the tire shine. Because it really should not behave differently on two different body panels.

Re: Meguiars Hot Shine Tire Spray left a nice hot yellow stain?

It's on all 4 wheel well areas. Scratch X helped a little bit but it is still there. Clay bar, quick detailer, wax cleaner, and plastiX did nothing.

I guess it is possible it could have been something else on the road and it was just coincidence the tire shine stuff was on the same areas. I don't remember going through any construction zones or seeing anything out of the ordinary on the road.

The car is only a couple months old, that is why it is bugging me a bit even though it is not in a very obvious spot.

To be on the safe side I won't use the foam stuff anymore for the tires and give the hot shine tire spray liquid a try. Any tips on keeping it on the tires and off the car? Even leaving the other stuff overnight I found it would get black down the side of my car that I would have to wipe off.

Are you sure you didn't ride on some freshly painted roads anytime? The yellow paint stripes could kick up onto your panels. It may not have been recently, but you may have recently noticed the stains since you are beginning to care for your tires. Tire Foam does not stain car paint yellow, or at all. But occasionally with too much application, you will get overspray/sling. Which can be easily washed off.
