Mirror Glaze

Hi,
Need some advise. I tried Meguiar's Mirror Glaze 8, Maximum Mold Release Wax on model car (Metal, finished with automative paint). My question is, would this be any better on a real car, looking that after you apply it on, nothing seems to be able to stay on it and also lasts a real long time. (Believe this formulation is the same as the old Meguiar's furniture polish? Correct me if I'm wrong here.) So back again, would this wax be a better alternative on cars, of which applied first and after that, Gold Class or NXT etc....advice/comments much appreciated.

Meguiar's #8 Maximum Mold Release Wax is either the first, or one of the first waxes ever formulated for the brand new invention called Fiberglas, which was glass strands by Dupont and a polyester resin by Dupont also (I think). I don't believe the #8 formula has ever been changed, I can check on that but I believe that is something one of the chemist told me when I was working on the new Velocity line of Synthetic Polymer mold release sealers and release products.

Point being, this is an older product that works great for creating a barrier film between the mold and the plug, but it's not the best product for automotive paints.

With all due respect, I politely correct you and point out that you are wrong.

Meguiar's never made a Wax for furniture that I know of. Frank Meguiar's was very adamant about not creating any refinishing problems for the furniture industry and also the automotive refinishing industry and this is why Meguiar's never came out with a wax till after he passed away in 1950.

Note: I think #8 Maximum Mold Release Wax came out in 1951

So back again, would this wax be a better alternative on cars, of which applied first and after that, Gold Class or NXT etc....advice/comments much appreciated.

Mold release waxes are interesting products.







The problem with them is most of the time when compared to modern formula's for automotive paints, they will not protect a car's finish as well, in the environments a car is exposed to. Mold release waxes are formulated for a very controlled environment, not a wide range of attacks.

Meguiar's would recommend a state of the art product like the new NXT Tech Wax for both beauty and protection.

Hi Mike,
Hey, thanks, that sure cleared a whole load of questions in my mind. A friend of mine used mold release on his car just yesterday, err...so long as its not my car! Ok, least now I have the facts right as well, thanks for pointing that out too. Reason I was asking about mold release wax was the fact that its stated that it has canauba wax, which we believed would thus last much longer then normal automotive waxes. Yes, mold release waxes are interesting products, I use to do this with the model cars that I finished painting, would heat up a small batch of mold release wax, and then let it cool off before applying onto the model. Man the finish was ....well, can I say, awesome? But never had the guts to use if on the ACTUAL car.

Mike, thanks for the stroll down memory lane, that old tin of Meguiar's Mold Release Wax. Remined me of an old friend, whom I had the pleasure of working with while I was in SF. Had the exact same tin in his workshop. He passed on last spring. Miss the old guy. Was he who got me into Meguiar's.

Yes, as a matter of fact, as unbelievable as it may be, the can of Mold Release Wax from 1967 has never been used!

Hi Mike,
No, I don't have any Meguiar's old staff when I left SF 8 years ago. (Left my heard in San Francsco) But using Meguiar's has always remined me of my old friend. He was 63 when he passed on. I don't only like Meguiar's Mike.........I LOVE it!
