  • Wax/Rain/Window question

I cleaned my car two days ago and waxed it. When I was driving yesterday, I noticed that when a raindrop hits the hood, many smaller water droplets bounce up and hit my windshield. This is really irritating because my wipers can never keep up, not be mention that it's dangerous when I can't get a clear picture of the road for a split second. Any idea what I should do?

You must have done a good wax job! Having said that,as you drive the water should never really build up to such an extent(coming from your hood)that it interfere's with your vision.I've never had that particular problem:Just heavy rain by itself hitting the windscreen directly.

Your complaining of rain drops from you hood?
        What about the actual Rain?
        Is that annoying too?
I'm not sure what your saying.
I use RainX and usually don't use my wipers.

Did you clay your Glass? It helps with the rain. I hardly need my wipers.

This is quite normal in most cases. Sometimes the shape or slant of the hood can aggravate this problem even more.

I would agree with SVT and apply RainX to your glass. But before applying the RainX, I would thoroughly clean your glass. I would take a piece of cotton toweling and Meguiar's M04 Heavy Cut Cleaner. Work the product thoroughly into the glass and wipe off. The type of abrasive found in the M04 will help to cut through the grime and build-up on the glass. Follow with glass cleaner and then apply the RainX following the manufacturer's instructions. That way, when the water spits up off the hood, it will run right off. Also, be sure to use top quality wiper blades.

Interesting. So would you clay your windows before M04 or after M04?

I would clay it first. For a thorough cleaning, it is hard to beat M04 on glass!

Cool! So when you say use a cotton towel to apply M04, what kind of towel are you referring to? A terry cloth towel? Can you work it in with a terry applicator (a good one) and remove with a microfiber? Or what is the best way to apply and remove?

Yes, I am referring to a piece of a cotton terry towel or a terry cloth applicator will also work just fine. Then you can remove with a MF or cotton towel. Work on a small area at a time, really working it into the glass and then remove. You will be surprised on how much gunk comes off the glass!!!!

I normally use a rotary and wool pad with the M04 on glass. But with that combo you must be careful to not overheat the glass or to touch the trim around the glass. Therefore, I usually recommend doing it by hand in most cases.

Another question for you Tim. If I can't get ahold of M04 Heavy-Cut Cleaner, will M01 Medium-Cut Cleaner be effective in pulling the grime out of the glass? Or is it not strong enough?

It will work as will M105. However, M04's abrasives are quite unique making it more effective on glass than the other choices. If possible, locate some M04 as it will be worth it.

NAPA Auto Parts stores are quite often an excellent source of M04 Heavy Cut Cleaner. Not always, but often. And as Tim says, it works great in this application!

Happened to come across this product when I was in O'Reilly this afternoon:

Anybody know anything about this product? Info from Amazon:

                              Product Description
Glass Science Glass Scrub Auto Glass Stripper is less of a glass polish and more of a glass cleanser. It removes water spots, lime scale, and sap things that cause the glass to appear uneven and leaves the glass looking smoother. Glass Science Glass Scrub Auto Glass Stripper removes contaminants from within the glass microscopic pores for a deep-down clean. Because Glass Scrub makes the glass smoother, it improves the performance of your windshield wipers. Wipers chatter less and move water more effectively across the smooth glass. Use Glass Science G Scrub Auto Glass Stripper periodically as a supplement to your regular glass cleaner. Glass cleaners are great for removing light surface dirt, but Glass Science Glass Scrub Auto Glass Stripper will remove the buildup that occurs over time. Use Glass Scrub before applying Rain Clear Rain Repellant Gel. Glass Science Glass Scrub Auto Glass Stripper should be applied to exterior auto glass. It should not be used on plastics or window tint. For plastics, use DP Plex-All Plastic Cleaner & Polish to clean and protect all clear and colored plastics. Deep clean auto glass without scratching. Use Glass Science Glass Scrub Auto Glass Stripper to remove the toughest contamination from exterior auto glass.

                              They had these there too:
