1971 VW Bus & 1959 Nash Metropolitan - Extreme Makeovers

We had another landmark night at Meguiar's Garage with a huge turnout of people to help restore the paint on these two classic cars with single stage paint.

Thank you to everyone that attended last night a thank you to both our Extreme Makeover Transformation Teams for their hard work and dedication to art of polishing paint!

    A few pictures...

    More pics later!

The guy with the blue gray t shirt looks like me. That little Nash is a cute little car. Great job guys.

Last night was a very busy night, tackling to single stage paint extreme makeovers is a lot to do in about 3-4 hours buy the forum members that attend these events really take it serious and do a great job.

I actually didn't get a lot of process pictures but Michael Stoops did so hopefully he'll be able to carve out some time and load a few more up to the gallery for this thread.

Here are a couple of "before" shots of both Extreme Makeover vehicles (funny how they don't look all that bad here):

But when you look close up, and use a little clay......

        Claying continued on both vehicles...

And so we busted out a gaggle of buffers (or is that a bunch of buffers???)

Since we can only fit so many people inside the garage and around the subject vehicles, some folks took a few minutes to touch up their own rides:

Mike Phillips brings out the heavy artillery!

Eric follows up with some M80 Speed Glaze to add some additional gloss to the paint:

We took a little break to recharge with some pizza and sodas....

        And cake!!

        OK, back to work!

This close up of the VW Bus shows the difference "after" polishing (the upper half) and "before" polishing (the lower half of the image). Look at all the gloss hiding under that oxidation!

Hey, the little Nash had some shine left in it, too!

Mike Phillips' last act for a Thursday Night Open Garage - wiping the NXT Generation Tech Wax 2.0 off an Extreme Makeover vehicle.

        The reflections are mesmerizing!

Why is Mario in ONLY the pizza eating pic and none of the polishing pics???

Nice Men at Work reference! Although some people might not make the connection.

"Traveling in a fried-out combie, on a hippie trail, head full of zombie."

A combie is Aussie slang for a VW passenger microbus used as semi-public transportation in the outback. No set routes, passengers usually flag down the combie as it passes them.

Anyone care to guess what the "zombie" references?

                      O.K. folks ;

I have been doing salvage - reconstruct on old beaters for over 40 years now and I've been using Meguiar's excellent products for 25 + years but until Thursday I never knew how to PROPERLY use them ! .

This old red car looked ready fot the crusher , it has a 10 year old $200.00 paint job on it , Mike and the rest of the crew REALY know the details of doing this correctly ~ I am sure there's many out there who , like me , buy old klunkers and tinker them back to health , rub out the paint and kiss 'em goodbye ~ try following all the step by step instructions Meguiar's gives you and you'll be FLABBERGASTED at how nice it comes out ! this Metropolitan is my personal car , I never imgained it could look so nice .

Kudos and a big THANK YOU ! tp all who helped make this happen !

BTW : ' KOMBI " is the original German name for the base model VW Van with rear seats & winbdows but no interior so it was a double duty vehicle , a 3/4 ton truck during the day and a people mover as needed . my Dad bought one in 1954 and I've had many ever since , still have my old 1968 bay window # 211 Parcel Delivery Van (panel Truck) in the back yard , will be up for sale soon .

                        Ha-Ha.....! I'm laughing here for 2 reasons.

Firstly, the song was great....I'm going to go and see if it's on yewchoob.
                        Your explanation is even better!
Secondly,I had a freind had one the same color. But it was a rolling disaster! The body work was bad with rust.(We helped him to patch it up a bit).In the winter,it was a freezer(no heating).
He had an engine swap, and the guy put in a 1300 from a Beetle(He got stung!).The engine he got was worse than the original.

                        That was a real 'combie!'

I can gather what the zombie reference is.......A bit like Hoochie-Coochie Man!

Aussie banter is great! "Shiela's" meaning "Chics",but it's the way they say it that's funny.

                        There's the vid! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DNT7uZf7lew

Next to it was TOTO Africa.another great track!

LOL, you're absolutely correct! Here's the definition from urbandictionary.com:

                          combie

A rusty beat up van at least 20 years old, about to fall apart, and in desperate need of a new paint job, new brakes, and new transmission. Popular transportation for hipsters who are in search of an eternal "prize" buzz with no desire to enter the workforce.

                            Big difference from German 'Kombi'....!

They're still cool vans.......Especially in the winter!

Most of the ones that I see are either the mustard two tone or the pale blue. Now and again red.

Hey guys, I love the work you have done on these cars. I want a VS Bus so bad, that is a perfect example of one I would want(:I love the color

I would like to be able to fix one up someday and have one, I just need to learn how to do that kind of stuff first(:
