No petroleum tire protectant

Does anyone know if Meguiar's makes a tire protector that does not contain petroleum products. I was told that I would need a product like this for my RV tires to prevent cracking a splitting.

I'll check on your request until then the problem your describing isn't a problem related to petroleum products used in tire dressings.

Most people don't give a lot of thought to their tires except for how they look. Truth be known, your tires are designed to perform under extreme conditions of heat via kinetic energy transfer, high speeds for long periods of time and incredible forces of torque and flexing. That's a lot to ask from a chunk of rubber, inflated with air like a cream filled donut.

The science behind the modern rubber formulas used by major tire manufactures today is both complex and interesting. The rubber itself contains and ingredient called Antiozonant.

Antiozonant is an ingredient that helps to prevent the exterior rubber surface from cracking, checking, oxidizing, and deteriorating. The rubber is designed in such a way as to constantly work its way to the outside of the tire and as such, continually replenish the exterior surface with fresh antiozonant.

After the antiozonant works its way to the outside of the tire and is exposed to the ozone in the air, it turns brown. The technical term for this effect is blooming.

This is why you see a brown film on the surface your tires. You can wash your tires with soap or an all-purpose cleaner and remove this film, but in a few weeks, it's back. That's because the antiozonant continually works its way to the outside of the tires every time you drive your car.

Thus before applying a dressing you really need to do a thorough job of cleaning the outer surface of the tire to remove any spent antiozonants as well as any previously applied dressing and this will prepare the rubber to accept a fresh application of tire dressing.

Okay, here's the skinny....

First, it needs to be clearly stated and understood that Meguiar's tire dressings are completely safe for use on tires no matter what the ingredients as our Chemists understand the importance of safety as it relates to tires on your cars, trucks, s.u.v.s and yes, Motorhomes.

The true problem with cracking and blooming, (blooming = browning of the surface), is the result of exposing the rubber to the sun, air and moister.

The problem is not caused by or accelerated by any of our tire dressings, in fact just the opposite, the deterioration process is slowed down with the use of our products.

That said, here is a list of dressings that can be used on tires that contain no petroleum products. Note that these are all water-based and as such don't have the longevity of some of our other dressings.

Also, all three of these products are in our Professional Line, not our Consumer Line. What that means to you is you won't find these products in Walmart, Target or what we call "Hard Parts" auto parts stores like Pep Boys, Autozone, CSK, Kragen, Reilly's etc.

You will either have to locate a PBE store in your home town or order online. Most towns have a PBE store they just don't have a HUGE neon sign on their building and usually are located in industrial areas, not on the main drag. How to locate Meguiar's Professional and Detailer products in your hometown



Here's 3 dressings that can be used on tires that contain no petroleum products. The first one, M40 is the only one available in a 16 ounce spray bottle. The rest are for the Professional Detailing industry and as such come in bulk sizes and must be transfered to a secondary spray bottle in order to use.

RV tires tend to have a situation that most cars do not...the rig sits for months or even years at a time without moving it. It is the flexing and heat created from driving that helps the chemicals in tires to work their way out. Using a proper protectant can be a real tire saver.

Of the three products listed, the M40 offers both good cleaning and good conditioning/protecting. This would be my choice for the criteria you listed because you want the cleaning action to remove any dirt and dust on the tires but also the brown residue too.

Just to note, "Car guys in the know" have been using M40 for over 25 years. It's our version of an Armor-All type product only with Meguiar's quality and reputation behind it. Most people that switch to M40 as their dressing for tires, vinyl and other rubber components love it. M40 has a very long and strong base of loyal fans and that's a sign of satisfied customers.

Hyper Dressing is a great water-based dressing and a personal favorite of mine as long as the surface being treated and maintained is pre-cleaned if needed before applying HD.

When you not driving the RV most RVers put a cover over the wheels to stop the sunlight getting to them. I'm not sure if those are commercial products or just plywood cut outs.

Thanks for all your help. We live at 7400' so the tires are exposed to high UV rays. When not in use the tires are usually covered with RV tire covers, however last winter we stored our rig in AZ and forgot to cover the tires. We are trying now to prevent further damage to the tires.

Good question. I'd like to know that answer too. I'm betting NOT water based because it does not seem to was off very easily.
