On vehicles with factory paint you are still dealing with approximately the same topcoat thickness even with a single stage style of coating.

So it is a good rule of thumb to follow the same general rules....

Just a reminder: When we say it is not a good idea to sand, we are saying it is not a good idea to sand for the purposes of removing orange peel....However, sanding with the appropriate grit in order to remove an isolated defect would be ok regardless of finish on a factory car as long as you are monitoring the amount of material you are removing.

Even did the before and after with the QuaNix meter. Only removed about .2 mil overall if I remember correctly.

Hold on tight, there's a ton of pictures in this post!!!

This is what we started with -

Mike Pennington added a little more to the existing mess.....

A little wet sanding by hand........

Wet sanding by hand the right way.....

    .....and the wrong way.

    Wet sanding with a D/A.....

    Very nice!!

    Cleaning the wool pad.......

How to pick up a bead of product.....

    Pulling out sanding marks......

Oh come on, he didn't actually miss a spot, did he???

Ah... no. Mike's a bit picky, eh?

And then we turned everybody loose on the rental car!!
