  • Windshield Cleaning Problem

I have what looks like dust specs on the windshield which are visible when driving into a bright sunlight. The windshield is covered with them. I am meticulous about cleaning the glass with Invisible Glass and microfiber and have even clayed the glass to get rid of the specs. Didn't work. The car is a 2008 Honda Accord. Any tips for removing the specs, eg, polishing?

Use M-04 with a little passion behind it. You will need the grit in 04 to polish the glass.

I used this on my window
It's good for removing stuff ON your window and not so much for scratches
Here's my write up on it:

What's on your windshield is not dust specs. It is most likely small rock chips...

Read through Mario's thread on the Glass Polishing Kit and give that a try...

Since you clayed the exterior glass. No improvement. I had a friends glass behaved the same way. I finally tried claying the interior glass and problem solved.

I realize this sounds silly. But this did happen. Thought I would pass it along.

Can you feel them, or feel pits?

I don't believe the specs are small rock chips. For one, I don't drive in an area that would have caused them and, secondly, the paint would be chipped also. It's not. The glass also feels smooth to the touch. I really believe they are a embedded contaminant of some type.

The glass is pitted by sand. Won't really chip the paint, you'll notice it on the paint, but it's easier to polish that out, and you wouldn't think anything of it. But when silica (sand) collides with silica (windshield) you get problems.

Im no expert at fixing this, it's just my two cents from living in the desert my whole life. You live at the beach....SAND

I live in SE PA - no desert, no beach - and have the same problem. I got some M04 a while ago to address this problem, but haven't had time to try it.

The inside glass claying idea from J.A. sounds interesting, too.

It will happen anywhere, I was just trying to stress that fact that he lives near an area that can produce a lot of particulate in the air. which is what causes this...

Very true. The windshield will, over time, essentially get sand blasted and you end up with those very fine pits that do look very much like dust. Unfortunately, there really isn't much you can do to either prevent or correct it.

yup, have the same problem, although my car is significantly older than yours, the only real solution if polishing doesnt work is replacement, one of the ins. co's actually requires a windshield change every 2 years, I think

Im having similar problems-what did you use as lubricant for claying the glass?

Exactly, and some windshields are softer than others. Like my old windshield was really hard, that's why when I punched it out of rage because it wouldn't stop fogging up it broke, keep in mind I didn't punch it very hard. But that windshield didn't have as many pits in it as my dad's windshield, both from the same era. (Mid 90's) My new windshield probably has as many pits in it now as my old one did, and it's only been a few months
                            So my old windshield=hard

My dads and my new windshield=soft.

I just worked it like the exterior claying. Last touch @ a 1:1 ratio. Started at the top and worked my way down. The first thing I did was to lay some microfibers down on the dash. This absorbed any excess lube.

                              Hope it works for you.
