        Wet-Sanding and Color-Sanding describe the same process

        Before modern clear coats became the norm it was usually referred to color-sanding because you could see the color of the paint coming off as you sanded.

        With clear coat paints you see a milky color which is the clear material as it is sanded off.

              To me wetsanding is the correct and logical word ,because thats what you use ,
              WET= water & soapmixture or Last Touch ,Quick Detailer.
              SANDING = sandingpaper.

                I've always refereed to it as wet sanding since that's the "process" I use to sand.

                  Shave & A Hair cut

                  A long time ago a shop I worked at, the painter had a beard and his wiskers would get in the paint and I got to sand them out and buff. So we would joke about it and I was the barber he picked.

                  Some old timers I worked with also referred to it as shaving paint.

                      I always refer to it as "wet sanding", though when I went to Maaco the other day he called it "water sanding". Whatever, its all the same thing.

                        Re: What do you Call it?

                        I'm thinking "color sanding" is wet sanding the peel down until it's flat as done on, but not limited to, trailer queen show only cars.

                          Usually I call it wet sanding.
                          Sanding clear, I call that color sanding.

                            I'm surprised I never heard my ex-teacher call it shaving.

                            I have used a fresh razor blade with rounded edges to level out runs, sags, and simular defects to speed up the color sanding process.
                            I would think that's what paint shaving is.

                              And although we call it sandpaper, sand is no longer used as the abrasive.

                              FWIW- I refer to the process as; wet-sanding with finishing paper
