Acrylic Sealants vs Polymer Sealants??

I am a bit confused...This is my first post. I've been a longtime reader. Anyway, I am trying to winterize my vehicles: 2003 Tahoe Z71 (light pewter metallic), 2000 Honda Civic EX (metallic dark green), 1987 Buick Grand National (black). I've been using Meguiar's products for over 10 years now. My regimen has always been: Wash - Clay - Dry - Polish (MirrorGlaze #7) and Wax (#26). If I am in a hurry, I just wash-dry-wax (#26). My vehicles always look great.

Anyway, I wanted something that would really seal in my paint and protect me this winter. My Tahoe and Honda are daily drivers. I've been reading alot about sealants and have heard that an Acrylic sealant will add more shine and will last way longer than a Polymer sealant. If anyone is interested, I read an article called "The Perfect Shine" off the Autopia website.

Can anyone shed some light on this? I am after the best shine and longest durability for winter. If Acrylics are in fact-better, does Meguiar's make any???? I know the Autopia site mention Klasse brand stuff but I have never heard of them or used anything other than Meguiar's products I buy.

What makes you think that one company’s acrylics aren’t polymers or that another company’s polymers aren’t acrylics? A polymer is a repeating chain of molecular structures. If those structures are molecules of acrylic compounds then you have an acrylic polymer.

Anyway, I’m not a chemist and can’t tell you whose sealants are based on what technology. I can tell you that Meguiar’s has very smart chemists who know what they’re doing and how to formulate products that really work.

I can also tell you that Meguiar’s synthetic sealants, like #20, #21 and NXT, last a long time and look great.

Great durability and a fantastic shine both come in the same Meguiar's bottle - it's called M21 Synthetic Sealant and you can purchase it from Meguiar's or autodetailingsolutions.com.

Put two thin coats of this on after doing all your prep work and I do believe you'll be a happy camper. I love the stuff!

Very interesting post. I had no idea that Klasse did that! Good thing I wiped it off as soon as it hazed when I tried it. I found that MPPP had equal or better durability and better water spot resistance when I did a side-by-side test on my black WS6 TA.

Well, that scared the holy heck [edited for language] out of me so I won't dare think of straying again...HA!

So does #21 need to be applied with a PC for maximum shine or is hand polishing enuff?

For maximum shine with any wax, a PC will be needed.

But #21 by hand wont dissapoint, it is really nice

Just remember to prep the paint properly beforehand, or a cleaner/wax like ColorX at least.

Best thing to do is to do a search using terms that apply to your questions, you can even do it on Google as Google will often pull up threads on discussion forums.

Or just buy the products you're interested in and use them and figure out for yourself if you like or don't like the acrylic products on the market.

I have read here more than once that NXT and 21 are nearly identical except that 21 is more rotary friendly for shops that refuse to do anything that cannot be done with a rotary so I do not know why people do not mention both.

They are real ... of course if you squirt #21 on, leave it to dry, scratch it a little you can then wash it off with water. I don't see what applying a product inappropriately proves, so no reason not to consider Klasse/Car-Lack and see if you like them. I certainly do like them ... and I continue to use #21, for example which works well on top of Car-Lack68 NSC/Klasse AIO on one of my cars, but would use Car-Lack68 Long-life Sealant/Klasse Sealant Glaze on another car where I do not like the finish that #21 leaves. It depends on your car, the colour and what finish you want from it.

Hand application of #21 is fine - follow the instructions, leave it sufficient time to bond, perhaps QD and dust off before buffing if you're using it outside and a little QD if you're getting smearing or shadows in the paint which can occur in certain climatic conditions.
