    Paul, are you taping this?

I can't get to it right now, I wonder if it will repeat? I'm always looking for this kind of information for my how-to book.

I did a quick search on both HistoryChannel and TVGuide websites and don't see it scheduled to air again soon. It's part of the Modern Marvels series, and the following is a description of the episode from the History Channel website:

From the Impressionist canvas to the Space Shuttle...from customized hotrods to the brilliant orange hue of the Golden Gate Bridge or tiny electronic devices--paint is one of our most ubiquitous products. And paint adds more than just pigmentation. It's a crucial engineering element, protecting ships from water corrosion, stovetops from heat, and the Stealth Bomber from radar detection. In homes and businesses, it provides a balanced spectrum of light and protects surfaces from wear. In this colorful hour, we discover how this marvel of chemistry and engineering is made, and how it is applied. Come see what's beneath the surface as we reveal one of man's most ingenious methods of defeating the elements and adding spice to life! TVPG
You can buy the DVD here for $24.95.

Sorry Mike, I wasn’t able to tape it.

I just happened to stumble into it and didn’t have a tape ready to go or anything. If I had known about it in advance I would have.

It’s a good episode but you can only cover 30,000+ years of paint history in so much detail in an hour. The section on car paints was fairly brief. It did mention and show old footage of how early cars were painted with varnish by brush before the revolution of cellulose lacquer.
