It looks like the front 1/4 or so of the quarter panel was touched up at some point probably several years ago. As it goes toward the back of the car it stops abruptly and looks like a pretty harsh attempt at a burn in. Is there a way for me to make it look better and less noticeable?

Hi all,

so a few months ago i set out to paint my Jet Ski. I did all the proper prep work (body filler, sanding, grease remover, primer, ect). Last weekend I finally got to painting, I did a glossy black auto paint and I used a cheap gun I bought from harbor freight. throughout the job I noticed orange peel was developing as soon as the paint hit the surface. I believe this could have been because of the wrong gun settings or that i had the pressure to low.

well now my entire surface is covered in orange peel and I would like to try and remove it. I'm not too concered about messing up the paint because I still have more than enough to redo it and it really couldnt get much worse.

I plan on wet sanding with 1500 grit then going to 2000 grit and then buffing it, does this seem like the right thing to do?
I have not sprayed clearcoat yet and I was thinking about just waxing it if it comes out nice, any thoughts on that?
I also own a rotary buffer but the jet ski does not really have large enough flat surfaces so I would have to buff it by hand, can that be do? i know it will take time.

Thanks for any input,
Only noticed a difference when it was dark and I put a light source to it. It looks slightly different at a certain angle and is difficult to photograph. It was a deep scratch but it looks a lot better than it was.
I assume I have probably gone through the clear coat and was wondering what affect/effect it will now have on the area and is there anything I should/could do to remedy the mess I've made!! I will post before and after pics when I can.

I think that when my body shop was doing some correction on my truck's hood repair/repaint, the tech might have scuffed though the shop clearcoat. The scuff is about 3/4 inch long and about 1/8 inch wide. My truck is white and I only notice the scuff under flourescent lighting at a "just right" angle. I found it as I was carefully checking for marring while using Ultimate Polish. I do not want to polish that area any more just in case it might make the scuff larger. Most folks (99%) would never have found this scuff.

This part of the hood did not receive a basecoat. The hood repair involved an area quite a distance from the scuff. The repainted area was a basecoat blend with the whole hood being recleared so if this area is scuffed, it may only be in the clear applied by the shop not in the factory clear.

Is all this confusing enough? :D

Whatever...The repair/repaint is guaranteed. I will talk to the shop owner about all this. Thing is ...I don't want a repaint for such a small blem. The hood had already been repainted at the factory. (That's another long story.)

Right now I have Ultimate Wax on the whole truck. Think a good coat of wax will keep the problem in check? This truck is darn close to being a garage queen and I'll probably trade it in a year or two. Again, it's white and doesn't show much at all.

Tom

I've got this 2008 Dodge Caravan with a very strange paint issue on the hood. The first time I detailed this vehicle and noticed it, it was just a small (smaller than a centimeter) bubbled up area of paint on the corner of the hood. At first I thought it was a repair job on the body and then painted over from the factory. But the strangest thing is happening, it's growing! It's now 4 times in size and there's another one that has popped up. I don't notice anything under the hood and these things are rock hard! Any ideas what would cause this?

Hello all!

I have a british Racing green Jaguar XJS that was stripped to bare metal and repainted a week ago. After that, it was taken to be wet sanded at a detail shop. Sadly, the detailer returned the car to me with terrible holograms from his buffer, which I managed make better with my Porter Cable XP and a mix of Wolfgang Swirl Remover, Meguiars Swirl X and an orange pad.

Now I have been driving the car around, and I have found that I can still see orange peel on the car specially from an angle, and it bothers me a lot. Because of how the car was returned to me, for a moment I assumed the detailer had just "buffed" the orange peel out and not really done the wet-sanding, but upon close inspection there are traces of sanding marks here and there, and the orange peel does get worse around the mirrors and door handles, so it does look like the car was sanded.

I would like to have the car wet sanded again by someone else, but am afraid the clear will thin too much and also that I still wont be satisfied. Is it likely that if the car is sanded again I will see a mirror like reflection from every angle, or am I just wasting my time?

Any help is greaty appreciated

So I went to 220 then 400. I had to do this to the whole car. The clear coat is fine. When I get it wet it shines. I never went to deep into the clear. Now I need to know what I should do next to get the gloss back.

Hi everyone. I'm new to the forum. I've come looking for some advice on a minor issue, with my new 2013 Honda Accord, which is bothering me enough to throw off my new car enjoyment. During my inspection I somehow missed the following minor paint defect. It's the only blemish in an otherwise glassy smooth finish. Even if I can't make it completely flush with the surrounding area, just smoothing it down a bit would make it less noticeable. Have a look and tell me if I should attempt some very light wet sanding, some other method or just learn to live with it. Be aware the first photo is a macro closeup, so it looks much larger and pronounced. Thanks is advance for your ideas and advice.

So after years of looking at this product and all my customers asking for a solution to "Road Rash" all over the front of their cars. I decided to get this system.

I've done alot of single paint blobs and wet sanding and it's always a labor intensive job to get it right and usually the customer won't pay for the time it takes to get the paint, paint it, wait 2 weeks, come back, sand, buff and polish. So I've generally don't do it unless I really like the customer.
So finally I bought the Dr. Color Chip System ( http://www.drcolorchip.com/ ) and put it to the test on a beautiful black Bentley.
My pics aren't to clear but you can see the difference.
I bought all of there stuff, brushes, cleaners and their biggest kit.

To start off the whole front end, hood and mirrors had alot of chips so I was hoping this system would work.

Here's the before pics:

So as you can see the whole front end had alot of chips every ware.
So instead of dotting the paint and smearing it I chose to use the wipe method to get all the little tiny chips.

Here you can see the coat of the magic paint.

And the after pics. Seriously you just wipe the paint off with the blending solution.

Here I wiped the paint on the entire front end

After wiping off the paint here are the results

I was a cloudy day so not much light. the paint had micro scratches from me wiping and I'll correct those next week. But I can recommend Dr. Color Chip highly!
For as little as $40 bucks you can fix all those chips on your car!
This products was extremely easy to use and with in a few mins you'll get the hang of it and fix your chips with ease.
Here's the site with all the instructions you need to have the confidence to do this yourself.

Hey there guys.
Now just to let you guys know i am a complete noob when it comes to vehicle detailing. Im also a poor university student who cannot afford high priced gears etc.

I wet sanded my bonnet and doors with 1000 grit sandpaper and now its left with little scratch marks everywhere. How can i get rid of them? I did some research and they recommend sanding it down again with higher grit? But from where i live 1000grit was the highest i could find o_O. Where can i go to find even higher grit paper?(Based in NZ).

After wet sanding with the sandpaper(Norton 1000grit) and discovering the scratches i applied some Mother pure polish on it to see if it makes it better but still the same ..

Not sure if you guys can see properly but there is scratches everywhere now :(.

Any advice or tips would be great!!

Thanks

Question regarding an old '02 Grand Prix "grocery getter." Car isn't in the best shape and I have no intentions of bringing it into such condition, but the young lady who owns it would like a number of paint defects (like, missing paint) repaired on the front bumper cover. Probably the most appropriate route in that regard is a rattle can job with duplicolor (unless somebody can recommend a better yet not more expensive product) with a little duplicolor clear on top. My question is whether I need to use their adhesion promoter beneath the duplicolor rattle can since I'm painting on plastic?

Thanks for reading this, I need some advice. I just had my Jeep painted one week ago with Nason black base and 3 coats of Nason clear. I have orange peel and some dust. I started wet-sanding with 3M 1500 grit paper soaked overnight. I started on the hood because it is off the body and would be the easiest to refinish if I botch it.

I plan on finishing the hood with 2000 and then 3000 grit. I have no experience with a rotary so I am about to purchase a DA orbital and whatever pads and compounds I need to polish. I know it will be difficult (more effort and time) to complete the job with an orbital but there is no way I want to tackle the irregular shapes of a Jeep body with a rotary. I am not looking for a show-car finish, however I do want to do the best job I possibly can.

I have read all I can on this forum and others, but if anyone could push me in the direction I need to go in terms of a plan of action, pads and compounds, etc. I would greatly appreciate it. I have no pics but the dust and peel is really not that bad considering its over black base.

Thank you for your time!
However it was the wrong color for my truck so I scuffed it up good, prepped it and applied paint and clear per instructions.

Instructions go on to say use 1500 wet sand to even out the clear and know down any dust etc...

Question is, once I wet sand (I've got 3M or harbor freight....difference??) what is the best meguiars products to finish?

Ive got Ultimate wax for final , and scratch x 2.0 if that would work for a compound. ?..?.

The van is a 19 vw t4 people carrier type van with dull white paint,it has had a good respray before I got it but now it has gone flat ,dull ,I do not know what type of paint is on it.
No rust apart from wheel arch rims which I have sorted.
I bought 5ltrs of satin black military style paint off ebay ,now I know tanks and jeeps ect dont have satin finishes but it is sold as military style
so I am guessing its not real tank paint.
Anyway its sold for brush or roller application the site says just scuff up the existing paint ,no need to prime just clean, scotchbrite and roller it on.
So I did.
First off I really cleaned the van then I flatted it off with sanding blocks and soapy water the grit was medium but I really dont know what grade -they were 3 for

So needless to say I had a shop repaint the car, has orange peel and I called to the bodyshop yesterday and they said there is 2 heavy coats of clear. Safe to say its not a hard hard clear;

I had the job done back 4 months ago.

Lastly what should I know before wet sanding this Friday? I bought 1500,2500, and 3000 gritt Meguiars sandpaper...

How long roughly should I work an area; I know its impossible to give a number but give me a idea. Will I be able to see if the orange peel is being removed or do I have to buff the car to see.

Secondly would my wife be able to drive the car still if I am not finnished wetsanding or is not a good idea?

It had been drying for at least a week, maybe even two on that particular chip.

So the story is that I lent my car to my sister on her road trip. She got bird poop on it in the beginning of the trip and didn't bother cleaning it. So it was sitting on the hood and a few spots for over 2 weeks since I didn't get the car back until a week after she came home. I go to school an hour away so I do not come back often. So when I came back I saw it filthy and decided to detail it. After washing and claying I found this spot and decided to use some ultimate compound on it. It didn't budge. So I decided to work on it more with a bit more elbow grease and nothing happened. It has been sitting there annoying me. So I was wondering would wet sanding take this problem away? Thanks

I just got my car painted and there is a lot of orange peel all over the car, I am planning to wet sand by hand to 2000 grit and then machine sand with 3000 grit then use the DA microfiber correction system.

I am also low on cash so I am looking for the most economical method.

any suggestions are welcome

Thanks

I was trying to beat a storm front home before I got caught in the rain. It was moving south as I was moving north. The cold front was close and the winds were picking up. I happen to be right in front of a construction site when an 85mph wind gust picked up the pebbles and debris in the road from the construction site and peppered the front of my car. It was strong enough to chip the windshield even. There are numerous new rock chips, especially on the metal headlight covers, as well as what I would call “dinks” in the plastic bumper. They are not quite chips as in down to the plastic, more like pock marks in the clear coat. Nothing that I could catch a fingernail on, like I could a chip. I would say 80% of the damage is from these dinks. I will repair the chips as best as I can, including a re-spray of the headlight covers if necessary, as they got it the worst being a metal part.
I am wondering if the dinks can be polished out, and if this is something an amateur can do, or should I seek out a professional? The only machine polishing experience I have is using a rotary to polish out the oxidation in my 2006 Tundra. I feel the margin of error was less given the fact that: A) It’s a truck, B) it’s white, and C) Toyota uses no clear coat on white paint, they just make the paint harder. It turned out well, but with the amount of oxidation it could only get better. I used LakeCountry pads and UC.
