Last night was the busiest TNOG we've had in a while - hectic but great fun with plenty of interesting projects and lots of people eager to learn. Just what these nights are supposed to be about!

This 4Runner gets used off road on a regular basis by it's owner, Mike, and other than some light swirls and a few scratches from encounters with the local flora, it was in pretty decent shape. We knew it could be in better shape though, so we did a couple of test spots and got Mike comfortable with the DA buffer.

The tops of the headlights were definitely in need of a little clean up, but these were easily reached with the buffer while doing the hood. This is before:

This is the same lens after just a quick run over with Ultimate Compound on a yellow polishing pad with the G110v2.

Off roaders and sports cars sharing the same space - we're an equal opportunity paint polishing place!

The paint on this MINI is looking a bit, um.....yeah. This is not good.

A quick test spot with UC and yellow foam....

....and we got this:

Not bad for a first go, but some deeper marks were left behind and we opted for the DA Microfiber System for faster removal of severe defects. Of course we had to get Ed comfortable with the system because this isn't his car - it's his mom's!

This is how the looked when finished, and now Ed has the skill set to bring the rest of the MINI to this same level.

White Wax on a DA.....what are we up to?

Claude rolled his truck into the garage for a quick freshening. Looks pretty shiny all ready, so why the White Wax?

See how much whiter and brighter the left side is, and how much darker the right side is? That darkness is due to dirt embedded in the paint, and White Wax cleaned it up beautifully and revealed the true whiteness of the paint. One step. Done.

Overspill into the parking lot as the sun goes down.

Reflecting the parking lot lights and the crescent moon in the hood of an Acura NSX. In this light you can't see all the swirls, but they are there, trust us.

Geez, we need to clean this mess up!

But first, another car to cycle through the garage!

Putting the DA Microfiber System to use once more. This is a 25 year old Imron respray on this mid '80s Corvette, and there are issues with some shrinkage in the primer that detract from the appearance and, unfortunately, nothing can be done to help that short of a repaint. But after a quarter century that Imron was starting to look a bit hazy, and that's where the DAMF System really showed its stuff. The improvement in clarity was striking, and the swirls were removed with ease.
What do you do when a car owner wants to learn how to do everything by hand? You teach him how...... starting with clay.

Yikes! This is from just a tiny portion of the hood.

The Ultimate Trio ready for action.

Working by hand is always hard work, so it's nice to have a personal towel valet handy.

It's not perfect (and the image is a bit blurry) but you can definitely see a difference in the "after section" (lower right) versus the "before" (upper left) - less swirls, more clarity, and a deeper shade of red.

Time to let the car owner give it a go, and make sure his technique is properly executed.

After wearing yourself out correcting half the hood, it's nice to see how the other half lives - bring on the G110v2!

Andy (AKA bmrfan) always brings something interesting to TNOG. Of course, that's easy given that he works with cars like this all day long! Lucky guy.

A little headlight restoration demo. Sanding with 1000 grit, then 3000 grit and then buffing out with a DA and 4" foam pads. You can see the clarity on the right side of this lens, which has already been corrected. The left side is being sanded with 1000 grit in this shot.

You can see how bad the lens was on the far left side - that's not just dirt, it's crusty and oxidized. But the corrected areas look like new again.

How's this for paint on a new car? How new? Well, this E-Class Mercedes doesn't even have it's official license plates yet and it's got this sort of issue all over the place.

But it gets worse - swirls, water spots, scratches. This is a new car????

As you might expect, we started by claying, and this E really needed it.

The DA Microfiber Correction System took care of the water spots and swirls fast enough, but left the paint a bit hazy after the compounding step.

A quick follow up with some M205 on a foam finishing pad and the paint is back to what it should be.

Cleaning up headlights still attached to the car.

Always good to see friends helping each other out. If you're going to ride, you should look good while you're at it.

With all this crud under the hood, why is this car suddenly smiling????

This is a Porsche 914/6 - yep, the rarer hot version with the 6 cylinder engine. Great looking little car.

This C4 Corvette is completely original.

Plenty of swirls in the paint on the Vette.

They were quickly removed with UC and a yellow foam polishing pad. We followed up with Ultimate Polish and Gold Class Carnauba Wax.

The 914/6 was in need of some TLC as well.

The paint was pretty soft on the Porsche so it corrected easily enough, but it also hazed a bit. You can see here that the swirls are gone but there is some micromarring present. That cleans up easily with a pass of M205 on a foam finishing pad.

Of course we had to make sure the car was doing things properly.

Demonstrating improper use of the DA on tight radius body curves. Cantilevering the pad like this will cause it to stop rotating.

Keeping the center line of the pad in contact with the curve radius will allow you to maintain pressure and pad spin throughout the process.

Nick gives a lesson in headlight restoration.

Time for the car owner to step up and handle the other side.

Another TNOG, another night of fun!

This 1990 Toyota Cressida came in looking pretty darn good, but upon closer inspection the paint was definitely getting dull and swirled. Still, at this age, and with over 250,000 on the clock and being almost totally original, it's in wonderful shape!

You can see the dullness and lack of clarity in the paint.

This paint was fairly hard, probably due to it's age, and we determined that the DA Microfiber Correction System was the best approach to bring it back.

It's like a picture coming into focus when you improve clarity to the paint!

Next up, a new Hyundai Sonata with only minor needs, other than a few isolated scratches on the hood.

The owner was very interested in the DA Power System, so we spent some time showing him proper technique then let him give it a go.

And "go" is what the scratches did!

The second Pantera to come to a TNOG in as many sessions - what are the odds?

But the owner didn't want to work - he wanted to polish up the engine and gearbox!

Solid progress using our 3 new Metal Polishes.

Swirls and water spots on a white MINI. This just won't do.

A quick pass with the DAMF System and things start looking the way they should.

Swirls gone. Water spots gone. Simple as that.

VW Jetta TDI Wagon. Very cool, until you see all the holograms that have been inflicted on the poor car.

All over the driver's side.

Throughout the hood.

The owner was very leery of using a buffer on his car so we demonstrated the safety of the G110v2. This is at full speed with a LOT of pressure. No damage done. Just don't EVER try this with a rotary buffer!

A quick test of Ultimate Compound and a W8207 Soft Buff 2.0 polishing pad.

Technique, technique, technique. Critical to getting good results.

And good results are what we got!

The lower right section is after using Ultimate Compound on a yellow polishing pad with the G110v2 buffer, the upper left is how this car, a 1987 BMW 325i convertible, was presented to us. This is single stage white paint so it's fairly hard, but it's also suffering from plenty of embedded dirt accumulated over the years. A quick go of UC brings back the brilliant white that this car should have.

That was a compound though.... what about our new White Wax? It's a cleaner wax that utilizes a SMAT abrasive, closely related to the abrasives found in UC. Would this make for a worthy one step on this car? Let's see.

We're using the yellow foam pad to get a bit more cut, and we're running at speed 5. Normally you'd apply wax with a finishing pad at speed 3, but this is a fairly potent cleaner wax so we wanted to see if we could maximize the cleaning ability of it.

This time the upper left is the after, the lower right the before. Remember, this was done with just a cleaner wax!

This picture tells the story a bit better - the brighter areas toward the nose of the car are after using White Wax, while the darker, duller areas are untouched.

It looks like 1980s German Car Night in our Training Garage!

And in the parking lot, too!

Once we sorted a process for cleaning up the BMW, we made sure the owner, Jess, had his technique dialed in so that he could go home and finish the job.

This gorgeous Porsche 911 is completely original and looks absolutely stunning. The owner has been using Meguiar's products on it for years, but the hood has been showing the signs of debris impact over the years. The car has over 100,000 miles on it, so it's been exposed to a fair bit of road debris, and the soft single stage paint has paid the price. The camera couldn't really capture the full extent of the damage, nor the level of correction we achieved, but the owner was pleased to see that he could actually improve the appearance and bring it more in line with the rest of the car.

A 2006 GTO with plenty of water spots, swirls, scratches and other problems.

Swirls!!!

After some M105 on the DA the swirls, water spots, etc are gone and the metallic really comes through.

Too dirty for just Quik Detailer to handle, this 2013 Camaro needed a bit of cleaning up before we could inspect the paint. But since we really can't wash in our parking lot, we did the next best thing - D114 Rinse Free Express Wash.

Using Garry Dean's wash method of sinking some folded microfiber towels in a bucket with a prepared solution of product, we set about washing the Camaro.

Just squeeze some of the excess water out of the towel, don't wring it out fully. And NEVER place a used towel back in this bucket!! Clean, unused towels only or you risk contaminating your wash water.

The first pass on this side of the roof. Notice how the towel is flat against the paint.

With the towel flat on the paint we pick up a line of dirt along the leading edge of the towel.

The second wipe, right next to the first, and the leading edge of the towel is now lifted off the paint. This keeps that dirt stripe from coming back in contact with the paint.

Here you can clearly see that dirt stripe from the second pass, with the initial dirt stripe still visible at the leading edge of the towel.

Pass three and the towel is picked up even further, revealing the two dirt stripes from the previous passes. More importantly, this method keeps those dirt stripes off the paint.

Now it's just a matter of drying the freshly cleaned panel with a clean, dry Water Magnet drying towel.

Putting the DA Power System to use on this small area that would pose a challenge to a full sized DA buffer.

The initial pass of Ultimate Compound and the burgundy cutting pad. Huge improvement that can only get better with a bit of refinement.

Oh my. This one may not have been done by George Barris, but this BMW 3.0 CSL was affectionately known as the Batmobile nonetheless.

We're told new wheel are on the way to better fill out the wheel arches on this Pantera.

Some paint polishing is in order on the Pantera as well, since this is not appropriate for such a car!

Half and half following an initial pass with the DA Microfiber System. Now we're getting somewhere!

Deeper scratches in an isolated area required a bit of 3000 grit wet sanding to knock down.

A little D300 on a microfiber cutting disc removes the sanding marks, swirls and all the other problems that were letting this paint down.

While we could have just done the two steps of the DAMF System, for this car we wanted a bit more, so we followed the correction with some M205 on a foam polishing pad, then waxed with Ultimate Wax.

A Fiat 500 Abarth with a bit of a chin scuff.

The scuffs were treated to some very light 3000 grit damp sanding and then buffed out. They were really deep though, so we didn't want to go crazy and risk removing too much paint on this urethane bumper cover.

You've got to look pretty hard to see the remnants of the scuff marks, but the owner was more than pleased with this outcome.

Nick takes the DAPS for another spin.

Our final TNOG of the year, and we brought out some samples of our 2013 New Products to play with. Everyone looked pretty impressed with these new products, especially the effectiveness of the new White Wax and the ease of use of the DA Power System.

We started out with the DA Power System using Ultimate Compound and the burgundy cutting pad....

....then moved to Ultimate Polish with the yellow polishing pad....

....and finally Ultimate Wax with the black finishing pad.

The left side is the untouched paint, full of swirls, the right side is after the three step process. The paint is darker, clearer, brighter, and almost totally swirl free. Is this tool a replacement for a DA? Of course not, but you're still terrified of a DA buffer, or you just can't manage the cost of acquiring one, this is a fantastic upgrade from hand application for defect removal.

Chris seemed to enjoy using it!

But the DA Power System isn't just for paint. With the carpet pad we attacked this badly stained floor matt.

We used our new Carpet & Upholstery Cleaner, which features a trick sprayer that shoots out a narrow stream for spot cleaning when you pull the trigger just half way.....

.....or a wide fan pattern if you pull the trigger fully.

Using the same DA Power System tool but with a special carpet pad, we got to work.

That's a huge improvement for not a lot of work!

Putting the White Wax to the test on a badly neglected hood.

Half and half shows the difference - you can't even see the reflection of the light in the side we didn't work on!

People have asked if they could use the cleaning ability of White Wax on a darker colored car. Well sure you can! Remember, this new White Wax is essentially a cleaner wax that uses SMAT abrasives, so it's got a lot of cleaning power. Here's a before shot of some swirled blue paint.

One application of White Wax and the swirls are almost completely gone. No, it's not a substitute for a full, dedicated paint cleaner like Ultimate Compound, but for a one step this is a huge result!

So, what about this mess? This is factory paint on a 1996 Mazda Miata, and it's a disaster.

One pass with M101 Foam Cut Compound used with our DA Microfiber Correction System's 5" cutting disc on a G110v2 da buffer and we got this. The deep pitting isn't going to go away, but the difference was night and day.

Taking a crack at M101 on the hood of the Miata.

M101 via G110v2 and.... what's this? M101 on the DA Power System????

Now that is an amazing improvement!!!!

We're winding down for the year, and our second to last TNOG of the year was a bit quieter than usual, but that's OK because we still had a great time!

Chris does some testing with the DAMF System on this older Honda Civic

This is something we hate having to do - tell a car owner that the repaint on their car is so horrible that nothing can be done to fix it except to have it stripped and repainted. Fortunately, in this case, it's just the hood that was repainted (and quite badly).

But the rest of the car was just loaded with swirls and fine scratches. At least these could be fixed.

Our man Nick gets to work on a test spot using the DAMF System on this 3 Series.

The paint on this BMW was fairly soft so the DAMF correction compound and cutting disc left some noticeable haze, as you can see on the left of this image. The right side is after a quick follow up with the DA Finishing Wax on the microfiber finishing disc. On this particular paint, since it so delicate, an intermediate step with M205 on a foam finishing pad would yield an even better result prior to waxing.

Here you can see the progression in a single image: across the top is the existing level of swirls and other defects. On the bottom left is after using just the DA Correction Compound and cutting disc. The swirls are gone but the haze is very noticeable. On the lower left is the second step of the DA Finishing Wax on the microfiber finishing wax.

Christian brought in his sweet new Fiat 500 Abarth and needed to clean up some water spotting just under the leading edge of the hood. Plenty of water spots to clean up here.

Part of the fender lip under the hood done with ScratchX 2.0, the rest still needs some cleaning up. Great result!

The black metallic paint on this Abarth looked great, other than a few scattered swirls here and there. It proved to be fairly hard, but not overly so, and the DAMF System did a great job cleaning everything up. Here we're making sure Christian is using proper technique to maximize his results.

Once his confidence was up, we cut him loose to finish the hood of his car.

Next week is our last TNOG of 2012 and we'll be playing with several of our new for 2013 products - don't miss it!

Charlston's Prius was in need of some general cleanup and he wanted to give Ultimate Wash & Wax Anywhere a go. This definitely looks too dirty for a regular quick detailer mist & wipe product, but it's no match for UWWA.

This is the rear spoiler area of the Prius - again, dirtier than you'd want to tackle with a regular mist & wipe product.

UWWA cleaned it nicely, with no scratching. The wispy looking white areas are cloud reflections, not anything actually in the paint.

Proper use of the microfiber towel when using UWWA. This "zebra striping" is what you should end up with as you use slightly different parts of the towel for each wipe, and then you use a second clean towel for the final wipe.

Allen brought his Acura RSX down for a quick clean up as he has a prospective buyer coming to look at it the next day. It was in desperate need of a clay treatment but we couldn't spend a ton of time cleaning the car up, so we opted for a great one-step stand by: M66. We ran it on a W8207 foam polishing pad with the G110v2 set at speed 5 and it worked wonders on the finish! It was great to see a bunch of the guys chipping in to help Allen with the claying!

See, we told you it needed to be clayed!

As is so often the case, we spilled out into the parking lot to work on multiple cars.

Mario brought this very cool little Mini Cooper panel van in because he was having some issues getting the paint to cooperate. It's an older single stage respray and it's in pretty tough shape. M105 was drying up badly, which is what can happen when trying to use that product on a very dried out paint. He was looking for some suggestions so we went for So1o (M86) and it worked great!

This is pretty indicative of how the paint looked all over the car.

Picking up a bead of M86 - we taped off the edges since we were running a rotary buffer for this test.

Mario is keeping a close eye on the progress........

This is how the paint looked before we started with the rotary, wool pad and M86.

This is what we got on our test spot - talk about an improvement in clarity!

Left side is after, right side is before. The reflection of the overhead fluorescent lights is nicely refined in our test spot on the left, and Mario now has a solid plan for finishing the car.

Staying with the red paint theme for a moment we move onto Marc's Civic Si with cat scratches on the hood (along with some swirls, thrown in for good measure).

We pulled out the DA Microfiber Correction System and did a quick test spot. We hear all the time about how super soft and delicate Honda paint is, and we've seen for ourselves just how soft and delicate the paint on the Civic can be. But not on this car. It wasn't hard either - it was pretty middle of the road, actually. And really not delicate at all since even the DAMF system left zero haze after compounding. We easily could have gone straight to wax if we'd wanted to.

Here's the paint after just compounding with the DAMF System. The cat scratches are gone and there's no haze. This shot is focused directly on the paint and not on the reflection of the lights - had we focused on the lights you couldn't tell for sure that the swirls and scratches were gone.

Marc then finished off the hood with D300 and the microfiber cutting disc.

But he then wanted to take the paint to another level so he followed up with M205 Ultra Finishing Polish on a W9207 foam finishing pad.

For the final step, Marc applied Ultimate Wax paste via 4" pad on the G110v2.

Back over to Allen's RSX: Looking really good, especially when you consider this was done with nothing more than M66!

As Allen puts the finishing touches on the RSX we just had to grab a shot of the gloss on the side of the car.

Last up for the evening was Neal's Honda (we didn't plan an import night - honest!!). He bought this car from his uncle who washed it regularly but never waxed it, never clayed it, and never even dried it after washing. This is what neglected paint looks like after almost 20 years, and it's not pretty!

Close up and it looks even worse. In fact, there's a lot of checking in the paint caused by engine heat, and that can't be fixed without repainting the hood, but the rest of this nastiness should at least be made to look somewhat better. Oh, and this shot is after claying the hood - as bad as this looks, it actually felt really smooth.

Once again, however, it's the DA Microfiber System to the rescue! Amazing!

You can clearly see the test spot, and Neal was really excited to see this.

OK, time to put the buffer in Neal's hands and make sure he's got the technique down right to maximize efficiency and results.

Once he got the hang of the tool we let him go on the hood, and this is what he achieved. What an amazing improvement!

Of course it isn't flawless, this paint will never be flawless again, but compared to what it was, this is pretty fantastic. Nicely done, Neal!

We had a variety of projects to work on this past Thursday, starting with a Lexus LS that Chris brought in for us to look at. The paint looked like it had been scoured - swirls, scratches... just a mess. We decided to go straight to the DA Microfiber Correction System to help it out. This is what we started with:

This is a half-and-half following a single pass with D300/DMC5

Same paint, different angle. This gave Chris a process to use to finish off the car later on, so he was good to go.

Dick brought in a new to him SUV that was in great shape. We did some closer inspection but all it really needed was a quick hit of M205 and a proper waxing.

This brand spanking new GTI was in fantastic shape so we just talked about proper maintenance and then hand applied a coat of Ultimate Wax paste just to make sure the owner was waxing properly.

Ed brought in this Acura that is intended to be his daughter's first car. The paint was really rough, but when we found out that the car has well over 200,000 miles on it we decided the paint was actually pretty nice, given its age. Still, we knew it could look better so once again the DAMF System was called into action.

Kelly brought his brother Brandon in for some guidance on cleaning up his MR2. Kelly is a regular at TNOGs so it was great to see him spreading the word!

The paint was just sort of dull overall on the MR2, but this really nasty scratch on the passenger door was the major sore spot for Brendon. An EZ-Up had blown into it during an event when the wind picked up and the poor MR2 got in the way.

We ended up doing a bit of feather sanding since the scratch was so deep.....

Then we used the DAMF System to remove the sanding marks.

The deepest part of the scratch is still there (it was really deep!) but now you have to look for it to find it, rather than having it jump out at you from 20 feet away.

Meanwhile, Paul shows Ed how to apply a paste wax with a G110v2 buffer and a 4" finishing pad.

And we give Brandon some pointers on using the DAMF System to attack his entire car.

Ed takes over with the G110v2 and Ultimate Wax paste.

Brandon takes over with the DAMF System.

This shot of the overhead light reflecting off the hood of the MR2 is in focus, but the paint was so dull and lifeless that it looks fuzzy and blurry.

After a once over with the DAMF System the clarity of the paint is greatly enhanced, as evidenced by the detail you can now see in the reflected light fixture. This is what we mean when we talk about the clarity of the paint.

Monte brought in his '94 Mercedes with just 44,000 miles on the clock - it looks like a new car, not an 18 year old car! But up close it had some issues he wanted to address, and the paint was fairly hard. Here, after a bit of one-on-one instruction, he's putting the DA Microfiber Correction System to good use.

Keith brought in his Bronco that was in serious need of some TLC on the hood. We had him clay it first then use the G110v2 to bring back some gloss. Unfortunately the paint is showing some serious checking that can only be fixed with a repaint, but he did manage to increase the gloss level quite a bit.

Constant activity well after dark.

Ken's Honda has a carbon fiber hood that's seen better days and needs to be sanded and refinished, but he was able to make a huge improvement in the paint on the roof of the car last night. Years of embedded dirt had really killed the brightness of the paint, but a little Ultimate Compound on the G110v2/W8207 pad brought back a brilliant white to the finish.

Changing from the slow movements and heavy pressure used with D300/DMC5 to the fast movements and light pressure used with D301/DMF5 often throws people a curve. Here we're encouraging faster application ..... hurry up!!

Plenty of swirls in the repaint on this Porsche 911....

Paul (AKA the other pc) taped off a section to test some product on the hood while the car owner, Art, double checks his product choice.
