I agree with "Fast Eddie" (Eddie they ever explain that to you?)
I was doing stuff "just wrong" and now while I rarely wash and wax (I learned the minimum:D ) I will at least do it better on those times when I do.
I was the rectal pain, old dude in front with Eddie.
Thanks Mike and thank you Barry!

is that my new nickname on meguire now??
"fast eddie"??
no i didn't heard...anything about that..
i was pretty much in all the examples Mike threw up.. :xyxthumbs
I totally had a good time.
I'm a huge car enthusiast and all, but i was able to learn and filter out what i was doing right and what i was doing wrong.
Sometimes you learn from you friend some detail/waxing technique but its not necessarily correct.
But through this class i was able to correct those mistakes so in the future i can make my car shine even better.
btw Crystal Gray Metallic + Dust = The win.. it nevers gets dirty
haha just kidding.
I didn't get a chance to wash my car before the class today
but i have a older picture from when i did wash + clay bar + meguair NXT tech wax.

Thanks Mike and Jose for having us over at Meguiar's.
I learned a great deal in the class. It cleared up a lot of the "bad information" that I've heard from word of mouth. I finally learned the proper way to detail a car. If it wasn't for the class I'd probably still be doing it wrong or learning from mistakes the hard way and going through lots of trial-and-error experiments.

Mike,
I'm sure that you have heard everyone tell you thank you and how much everyone had learned the other day. Well here's another thank you :)
I've been using Meguiar's products...well...since I was actually able to when I was a kid. All of those years of using the products ( testing vairous "systems" ), I never learned as much from hands on as I did in your class.
To be honest I didn't think that I was going to learn anything new but I absolutely did. As you stated in class, "All about technique".
Mike you are an awesome instructor and again Thank you.

Mike- I can't believe it... you actually picked a WHITE car for the demo? Isn't this the first sign of an impending apocalypse or armageddon or something?
:bow

Jan 9th, 2006, 06:27 AM
There were only two black cars and they were the only two non-Subaru's in the class.
IMHO, picking a white car is a great test. It shows that all the detailing techniques work on a white car and will make a difference.

Well we really like to pick a dark colored car because it's easier for people to see the before and after results; it's also easier for a camera to document the results.
You can see that Joey aka Rallyroo did a good job of capturing the before and after with his camera skills.
(Thanks Joey! :xyxthumbs )
As I work my way though the photos I'll post the before and after shots I was able to capture. This time of year the sun hangs low in the sky and makes it a lot more difficult to capture before and after compared to when the sun is shining directly overhead.

Thanks for showing us the car care techniques we have been needing to learn. I would still leave swirls on my car if it werent for this class. Thanks a bunch for the goodie bag as well.
I'll be picking up the dual action polisher and maybe doing some work with it considering i got laid off from my job last wednesday.

While you're still looking for a new job, you can start detailing other people's cars and hopefully pull in some money. Or at least get your money back from your investment on the DA polisher.

Mike was a great instructor and taught the subject extremely well. He perfectly blended product advertisement without making me feel like it was a sales pitch only. I am not a guy who listens to advertising in order to buy a product, but by him demonstrating the products in class, it proves that with the right technique it works. As a testament, I will be placing a rather large order for my car. Thanks for the class, it was great!

Like was said earlier, there was too much information to process. Mike is very knowledgeable and a great teacher. I really feel I now know everything I need to know to care for my cars interior and exterior properly. I will definately be using more Meguiar's products...and maybe making some money on the side.
Thanks for the food and goody bag.

The class exceeded my expectations in everyway and i was taken back by the generosity of Meguiars for hooking us all up with such an opportunity, not to mention food and free product! Last week I knew just about zilch when it came to proper car care (probably like 95% of the population). After this weekend I feel like a bonafide expert (almost). Not only was it educationally eye-opening but a lot of fun as well.
You guys have a real good thing going on here by reaching out to people at a grass-roots level. I'm sure it's generating strong word-of-mouth and creating new converts every weekend (I know I'm one). I think knowing what I do now, I'll never be able to drive by another carwash again without cringing thinking about the swirls those customers are getting with those dirty cotton rags.
Mike's enthusiasm for his work really shows - thanks to both him and Jose for the class.

After walking through all the Subarus brought to Meguiar's we finally chose Jaimee's white Subaru because it had the worst looking finish of all the cars present.
We usually try to choose a dark colored car because it's easier for the human eye to see defects and more important to see changes in appearance after working on it.
On this day most of the darker colored cars were in pretty good shape so we chose Jaimee's because it presented the best challenge for the things we learned in the classroom as well as a chance to put our products to the test.
Now during this time of the year the sun hangs low in the sky, this makes it a challenge to get good pictures but we did our best.
Here's Jaimee's Subaru before
http://archive.meguiarsonline.com/gallery/data/500/2SubaruSwirlsBefore1.jpg
http://archive.meguiarsonline.com/gallery/data/500/2SubaruSwirlsBefore3.jpg
The above photos were resized to 700 pixels wide, the below to photos are original in that I cropped out a 700 pixel wide section out of the original.
http://archive.meguiarsonline.com/gallery/data/500/2SubaruSwirlsBefore4.jpg
If you look closely, you can also see water spot etchings throughout the finish besides the swirls.

In our classroom setting, we always go over the basics such as Meguiar's 5-Step Paint Care Cycle (http://www.meguiarsonline.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=2409) and then we follow these steps during the hands-on section.
After everyone had a chance to inspect the finish and get a good look at the swirls we had Jaimee drive her car into the garage and we moved on to Step 1 Washing, only in our case we wiped the car down using a mist & wipe product as washing cars can potentially create an unsafe work area by making the floor slippery. Luckily, the car was fairly clean.
Note: If you're reading this and planning on attending a future class at Meguiar's, if you would like your car to be considered for the demonstration vehicle, please make sure you wash the car the night before as due to time restrictions, it's really hard to hold the classroom portion, eat lunch, and then wash and work on a car, instead it's best to go right from lunch to working on a clean car.
Everyone joined in to wipe the car down using Meguiar's Quik Detailer, Speed Detailer and our Supreme Shine Microfiber polishing cloths to remove any light dust and other surface contaminants. When everyone joins in, it doesn't take long to detail a car! :D
Ready, Set...

After getting the car clean the next order of business is Step 2 Surface Prep. To do this we used Quik Clay System (http://www.meguiars.com/?auto-detailing-clay/Quik-Clay-Detailing-System) to clay the finish and remove any above surface bonded contaminants.
Here's Joey, aka Rallyroo showing everyone the correct technique for using detailing clay

EDIT: ouch about that backing plate. I don't know for sure if my order was shipped in full or ?
kenji815, were they shipping you a partial order? Thats going to be a bummer if i get my PC with no backing plate.
apparently Jose was suppose to tell us that the backplate are out of stock. So i'm assuming everyone's order is getting shipped incomplete without the backing plate.
Below is the email i recieved
Eddie,
I was forwarded your email from Mike Phillips. Your order was placed on Monday and shipped. The UPS tracking # is ** if you would like to track it. Coming from Tennessee I would guess it will arrive at the beginning of next week. I hope Jose made you aware that the backing plate for the machine is on back order and will ship immediately to you when we receive more. Sorry for any inconvenience. Feel free to give us a call at 800-347-5700 if you need anything else at all.

thanks for the update... because no i was not aware of that. That is quite the bummer. I guess i can just sit around and not wax things. I was hoping to do my car on saturday night, but i guess ill have to wait a bit.
Are backing plates something that wears out? should i consider just going out and buying one because i might need two anyway?

Yes they do wear out, if you plan on doing a lot of polishing it wouldn't hurt to have an extra one. If it were me and I wanted to work on my car, I wouldn't let the lack of a backing plate stop me.
Just to note, I had know idea they were out of inventory. :(

yeah, but you know how it is... im a kid with a new toy, im going to want to play with it. I might just get an extra because eventually ill probably need another one.

I think i can wait another week before i go all out on a full detail job.

Hmmm wonder how?
To add an Avatar to your name on a forum there is usually an option for this in the User CP, or User Control panel.
http://archive.meguiarsonline.com/gallery/data/500/2UserCP.jpg
You can either right click on the photo and save it to your computer for example to your Desktop, and then upload it to the forum where you want it from the User CP, or you can link to it by right clicking on the photo and highlighting and then copying and pasting the URL Address into the place provded for the address in the User CP interface.
It probably sounds harder than it really is.
The most important thing is to know the size limit you are restricted to for your Avatar, most forums are between 80 pixels and 100 pixels, ours on this forum is set to 150 pixesl.
Here's 150 pixels... (What you currently have here on this forum)
http://archive.meguiarsonline.com/gallery/data/500/2150_SI0001.jpg
Here's the same Avatar at 100 pixels wide,
http://archive.meguiarsonline.com/gallery/data/500/2100_150_SI0001.jpg
And here's the same Avatar at 80 pixels wide,
http://archive.meguiarsonline.com/gallery/data/500/280_150_SI0001.jpg
As you can see, it's more fun to have a larger Avatar than a smaller one! By the way I created these Avatar's using EasyThumbnails which you can learn more about here,

After wiping the car down and then claying the finish, we went over the techniques required to remove defects by hand and also by using the G100 dual action polisher.
Applying ScratchX by hand,
http://archive.meguiarsonline.com/gallery/data/500/2SubaruScratchX.jpg
Here's a how-to article on using ScratchX by hand,
How to remove a defect by hand with ScratchX (http://www.meguiarsonline.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=1516)
Next we went over how to use the G100 with a W-8006 foam polishing pad with our M80 Speed Glaze on how to use good technique to remove swirls by hand. We followed the same directions as outlined here,
Using the G-100 to remove swirls with the Professional Line (http://www.meguiarsonline.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=2965)
Both of the above how to articles can be found in the How-To section of the Information Station (http://meguiarsonline.com/forums/forumdisplay.php?s=&forumid=82)
By the way, almost all of the information we cover in our classes and almost all of the questions that are asked at our classes can be found in the Information Station (http://meguiarsonline.com/forums/forumdisplay.php?s=&forumid=82)

After going over techniques, and then some hands-on training, everyone was invited to step up to the plate and try their hand at using the G100 dual action polisher to remove swirls...

After removing the swirls in the two test sections, we applied some NXT Tech Wax, allowed it to dry and after removing it we had Jaimee drive the car out where we could see the results...
http://archive.meguiarsonline.com/gallery/data/500/2SubaruBackout.jpg
Then everyone is asked to move into a position to place the reflection of the sun down on the areas we worked on and the areas we didn't work on to really see the results in before and after.

Here's Jaimee's Subaru before
http://archive.meguiarsonline.com/gallery/data/500/2SubaruSwirlsBefore1.jpg
http://archive.meguiarsonline.com/gallery/data/500/2SubaruSwirlsBefore3.jpg
The above photos were resized to 700 pixels wide, the below to photos are original in that I cropped out a 700 pixel wide section out of the original.

If you look closely, you can also see water spot etchings throughout the finish besides the swirls.

Just a heads up to everyone who is ordering G-100's right now. I received mine in the mail on monday (1/16) with the rest of my order (some foam pads, etc) but they ARE indeed out of backing plates at the moment.
I called and spoke with George he said they do not have an estimated ship date for these yet so it may be a while. :(
Looks like ill be going out and getting a backing plate somewhere!

Ok so last weekend i went at it. Ive just been lazy and haven't posted up the pics... ive been too busy driving around in my shiny car!
Some of the "before" pics. I have an underground washing area at my apartment so the pics weren't the greatest.
Marring on the roof:

Trunk before:
http://409industries.com/ImageHosting/STi/DetailedSTi/trunkbefore.jpg
Hood before:
http://409industries.com/ImageHosting/STi/DetailedSTi/hoodbefore.jpg
Lets get started... wash it (with my new grit guard too! yay)
http://409industries.com/ImageHosting/STi/DetailedSTi/washit.jpg
After drying completely... claybar!
http://409industries.com/ImageHosting/STi/DetailedSTi/claybar.jpg
Tape off all the black trim...
http://409industries.com/ImageHosting/STi/DetailedSTi/maskingtape1.jpg
http://409industries.com/ImageHosting/STi/DetailedSTi/maskingtape2.jpg
Then i did about 2-3 coats of polish depending on the swirl / cobweb swirl damage on each section of the car. This took a TON of time to do. Interestingly enough i didnt notice much difference in the way M80 and M83 cut the cobweb swirling... i will have to search some more on the forums for the answer to that. my G100 is my new best friend!!!
So fast forward even more, i did 1 coat of Meguiars Gold Class wax since i have so much i dont see the need to go out and buy NXT Tech wax just yet. Heres the results:
http://409industries.com/ImageHosting/STi/DetailedSTi/cleansti1.jpg
http://409industries.com/ImageHosting/STi/DetailedSTi/cleanback.jpg
some chipping damage on my hood... :(
http://409industries.com/ImageHosting/STi/DetailedSTi/cleanhood.jpg
http://409industries.com/ImageHosting/STi/DetailedSTi/cleanheadlight.jpg
the trunk came out the best out of everthing IMO:
http://409industries.com/ImageHosting/STi/DetailedSTi/cleantrunk.jpg

So there ya have it. Thanks again Mike!!!
